I have a 3 year old cat and a 6 week old puppy. Right now my cat just hisses and runs and hides most of the day with her. It's only been like a day and a half since we got the pup. In time do you think they will atleast tolerate each other??

Sure they will. Pup has to learn his place, and cat needs time to adjust, but I've seen lots of cats and dogs that get along. At the very least, they'll reach an understanding and stay out of eachother's way. Just give it time. If pup is harassing the cat, grab him by the scruff of the neck and give a little shake saying "No!" He'll get that you disapprove. Cat just needs time. One of my cats kept taking "cheap shots" at my dog without provocation, so I gave him a little flick on his nose. He stopped after that.

I just went through this a few weeks ago.
I have a year old cat and we just got a 2 year old dog. The dog loved the cat at first but she was a little too friendly and the cat flipped out and attacked. The dog realized that she's not going to be hanging around the cat unless she wants to get beat up.
As far as the cat goes, she was a nervous wreck the first week. The second night she threw up a couple of times due to the stress. She's calmed down a lot now and she's back to her old ways.
It takes some time and you have to let it happen by itself. Don't force any introductions, that could make the cat feel trapped. The puppy also needs to respect the cat's space (I know that's a little much to ask of a puppy, but with supervision it should be okay) As long as kitty has claws and can put the puppy in it's place, you'll be okay. Trust me, the dog will turn the other way and run! The cat was there first and she's angry now but I promise, it will work itself out.
Good luck.

They should get along after a few days. Make sure the cat has plenty of places to get out of the puppies reach.

We just brought home a puppy on Sat and have an 8-9 year old cat and a 20 year old cat. The real old one tolerates the pup and the younger one plays with it a little. Of course they had to "break in" a puppy last year too and the senior cat has had many puppies pass through her life.

They should be able to work out a decent living arrangement. Probably even get to playing together and sleeping together.
Things to do to help out-
Make sure cat has plenty of spots to escape to. Pup is going to want to play and cat needs an escape route from Mr Rowdy Paws. Don't let the pup chase the cat. They can play chase once they establish a working relationship.
Be sure the pup does not displace the cat from bed and food spots. You may need to relocate the cat's food bowl, but don't let the puppy take over her spot on the bed. or where ever cat has as an established spot. Allowing that sort of displacement will mean cat starts having litterbox and destructive behavior issues.
Speaking of litterboxes- absolutely don't let the pup start after the cat when cat is using the litterbox. Teach the pup the litterbox is an ultimate off limits item! This will save you some grossed out moments as well
Pretty much referee their interactions so neither gets too rough.

Yes, they can. We have two cats that are about 10 years old and just got a puppy. One cats shies away from puppy but they all do well together. If the puppy goes to far the cats will let the puppy know its place and when the puppy grows it will remember who the boss is. Our puppy is very energetic but all is well so far. Best of luck with pup and cat.

I'm sure they will. The cat is trying to tell the pup that it's the boss and I'm sure the pup thinks its playtime. We had 4 cats when we got our dog (who was from a shelter and 1 year old) and she just kept wanting to play with the cats. They would hiss, spit, swat and run and this kept up for about 2 to 3 weeks. So hang on for a bit longer and I'm sure everyone will get along just fine. I even have one cat that snuggles up next to the dog sometimes for a quick cat/dog nap. Just remember to give kitty a little extra attention to let it know you still love her/him.

Eventually they will come to an agreement, or at least declare a truce, but don't expect it to happen anytime soon. A three year old cat is very self contained, very set in its ways and very much ruler of the roost. A six week old puppy is rambunctious, clomps around and charges into things, and also yips, drools, chews and drags things around. All of which is guaranteed to annoy an older cat. So don't look for the situation to improve very much until the pup grows a bit and starts to settle down.

it will take a very long while. my cat is three and we had a dog (which we recently got rid of) i wouldnt say they became best pals, but they learned to be okay with the existence of the other. but when the dog went to go sniff the kitties bum-- watch out! hell broke loose haha. i'm sure they'll be okay. just be sure to have some products on handy if your cat starts spraying the house. Natures Miracle to clean it, then Feliway to makesure they stop spraying.
