The rider to the question is - if they are supposed to be celibate, why do so many of them use their positions of trust and 'power' to indulge in the sexual molestation of children in their 'care'. The biggest problem with this rather stupid convention is that they are men, flesh and blood and natural desires. Catholicism - stop being so bloody foolish!!!
For those of you waiting for permission to use contraception, which would go some way to reducing poverty in third-world countries where Catholicism was forcibly introduced, waiting for permission for women to become priests, waiting for JC to re-emerge ... don't hold your breath. Ain't gonna happen. If you think so, you are deluded; living in a fantasy world.

First, Judeo-Christian tradition has always held that single people be celibate. This is taught by Judaism and Christianity from before the Scriptures were written down.

The question should be: Why can't priests marry?

This idea of a celibate clergy came from the Jews, John the Baptist, Jesus, and the Apostle Paul.

The Jews. The Talmud argues that a person whose “soul is bound up with the Torah and is constantly occupied with it” may remain celibate (Maimonides, Laws of Marriage 15.3). For example, Yahweh ordered the prophet Jeremiah not to marry (Jeremiah 16:1-4). Moreover, the Essenes was a group that was active in Jesus’ time that practiced celibacy and thought by most scholars to be the authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

WWJD? What would Jesus do? Jesus did not marry.

John the Baptist and Jesus are both believed to have been celibate for their entire lives. Some scholars believe that the example of the Essenes influenced either or both Jesus and John the Baptist in their celibacy.

The Apostle Paul is explicit about his celibacy (see 1 Cor. 7). There is also evidence in the gospel of Matthew for the practice of celibacy among at least some early Christians, in the famous passage about becoming “eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 19:12).

The concept took many twists and turns over the years and will probably take a few more before Christ returns in glory.

With love in Christ.

They operate on the assumption that IF a man is married, he can not devote a 'proper' amount of time in serving God. It is a false assumption.
Catholics claim that Peter was the first Pope. And yet he was married.
(Matthew 8:14) And Jesus, on coming into Peter’s house, saw his mother-in-law lying down and sick with fever.

(Mark 1:30) Now Simon’s mother-in-law was lying down sick with a fever, and they at once told him about her.

(Luke 4:38) After getting up out of the synagogue he entered into Simon’s home. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was distressed with a high fever, and they made request of him for her.

And it is a total denial of God's plan.
(Genesis 1:28) Further, God blessed them and God said to them: “Be fruitful and become many and fill the earth and subdue it, and have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and every living creature that is moving upon the earth.”

this relies upon on what ceremony of the Catholic Church you're pertaining to. lots of the jap rites do enable their clergymen to be married. The western ceremony that is the biggest of all the rites right this moment does not enable their clergymen to be married easy. this custom isn't doctrine and may want to get replaced at each and each and every time contained in the destiny as their isn't any scriptural rule forbidding a married priesthood. The prepare grew to change into favourite through economic issues that arose from having a priesthood the position the final public of guys the position married.

There is no Biblical reason why they can't get married. Peter was married. After the great apostacy got under way, men came up with their own rules rules that forbade others from getting married. See 1Tim. 4:2, 3.

Because Christ was a celibate. And if a person wants to follow Christ, he has to deny himself, carry his cross and follow Him. It is really a very tough act to follow. To be a true Catholic priest is not easy to do.
