Well, who doesn't? I love sleeping in front of a fireplace or watching the flames. And if I didn't think a whole herd of kitties with tiny AK-47's would show up on my doorstep, I'd say that I'm at least as smart as a cat!
But that's blasphemy to a cat, so consider it unmentioned. I don't want to get a "catwa" taken out on my life. ;-)

My p***y cat likes being in front of the fireplace too. It is because it is warm.
Just like he likes being on clothes straight out of the dryer.
I will never get p***y cat fur out of my clothes if he keeps doing it. lol

Cats love to sleep all the time. I know mine does! And she loves being warm. The fire's relaxing too, kind of hypnotizing. I know it calms me down.

The fire keeps him warm and the flicking of the flames interests him. just watch to make sure he don't try to get the flames

Cats are curious by nature, he/she may be sitting there just a wondering what them pretty flames are doing.
