Hi Heather. I have suffered with chronic kidney stones for over 25 years. Only recently did I finally determine the cause (in my case they are a result of undiagnosed Celiac Disease - gluten sensitive enteropathy).
What type of stones are they? If they contain oxalate (the most common type) then you and your doctors (time for new ones???) need to evaluate all the conditions that can cause increased levels of oxalate in the urine (hyperoxaluria).
Almost any condition that affects the gastrointestinal tract can cause hyperabsorption of oxalates from the diet. Celiac Disease (CD) is probably the most common (1 person in 100, but sadly, as in my case, it is rarely properly diagnosed in the U.S.). Intestinal dysbiosis, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, use of NSAIDs (Advil, Motrin, Aleve, etc), antibiotics, acid inhibitors (Nexium, Pepcid, etc.) and other COMMON functional problems in the gut can lead to a 'leaky gut' and excess oxalate absorption. These conditions must be 'ruled-out' by proper diagnostic testing and evaluation by a knowledgeable doctor.
There is a huge misconception about kidney stones and calcium. Most stones contain calcium, but only in rare cases is calcium the cause of the stones. Again, it is excess oxalate in the urine that causes calcium oxalate stones to form. Numerous scientific studies have shown that CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTATION prevents stone formation. How? Calcium in the gut binds with oxalate (rather than in the kidneys) and prevents the absorption of too much oxalate. So, you should be taking about 300 milligrams of CALCIUM CITRATE supplements with each meal.
Potassium Citrate supplementation has also been shown to prevent stone formation.
Vitamin B6, vitamin A and vitamin B1 supplementation have been shown to decrease hyperoxaluria in animal studies. Researchers at Harvard Medical School have found that women who consume greater than 40 milligrams of B6 daily reduce their risk of kidney stone formation. Vitamin B6 deficiency causes increased oxalate excretion in the urine. More than 50% of Americans do not consume the RDA level of B6 from their diet. (Note: 40 milligrams is about 20 times the RDA.)
Magnesium is also important for the prevention of stones. 60% of Americans do not consume adequate levels of magnesium in their diet. The leading magnesium research journal "Magnesium Research" reported in 2005 that:
1) Magnesium inhibits calcium/oxalate crystallization in human urine
2) Magnesium inhibits oxalate absorption from the gut (similar to calcium's effects), and
3) Magnesium and potassium citrate supplementation improves therapeutic outcomes for stone formers. (Be sure to use magnesium citrate and not cheap, common forms like Magnesium oxide.)
Citrate plays a key role in inhibiting oxalate stone formation in the kidneys. Inadequate levels of magnesium actually cause decreased levels of citrate in urine.
Lastly, imbalances in levels of Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) in the diet appear to play a significant role in stone formation. The Standard American Diet contains an excessive amount of Omega-6 EFAs and is deficient in the Omega-3 EFAs. Excess levels of Omega-6 Arachidonic Acid appears to be a major 'player' in stone formation. Supplementation with Omega-3s (Fish Oils) has been shown to decrease oxalate in the urine of stone formers.
Are you still with me? I know there is a lot of info. here, but I also know the pain you are suffering - I have been there too.
Here is a summary of my recommendations:
1) Find a good Naturopathic Physician, Chiropractor, Certified Clinical Nutritionist or Medical Doctor trained in "Functional Medicine" to help you evaluate the health of your 'gut'.
2) Avoid fast/processed foods because they are deficient in vitamins, minerals, and Omega-3 fatty acids and they are excessive in Omega-6 fats.
3) Supplement with a quality Mulit-vitamin/mineral supplement (not the junk ones like Centrum or One-A-Day; you may need to see one of the specialists I noted in #1 to get a quality product).
4) Supplement (in addition to the multi) with
a) 300-500 milligrams of Magnesium Citrate
b) 600-1000 milligrams of Calcium Citrate
c) 500-1000 milligrams of Potassium Citrate
d) 40-50 milligrams of B6
e) 1-6 grams of quality Fish Oil.
All supplements should be taken with meals in divided doses (a little with each meal) throughout the day.
Every thing I have discussed here is in the mainstream medical literature. It is a lot of information to 'digest' but I hope it will offer you the help you need.

No it is going to haven't any outcome. They are enormously painful regardless that. Kidney stones and bladder stones are 2 exclusive matters (in line with the opposite answerer). Both are painful, however in people a minimum of, treatable.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.
