If it was totally unbearable, would so many people have them?

Tattooing has been banned in some states for health and safety reasons. Unsterile tattooing equipment can transmit infections, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C and even HIV. The risk is so significant that the American Association of Blood Banks requires a one-year wait between getting a tattoo and donating blood.

Q: What signs of infection should someone who has been tattooed watch for?
A: Increased pain, tenderness, swelling, heat around the tattoo site, red streaks, pus, swollen lymph nodes - all of these are signs that you need to see a doctor for antibiotics.

Q: What other risks are involved?
A: You could get granulomas, little nodules that can form around the tattoo, or keloid scar formation. Some people are prone to developing these keloid scars, which grow beyond the boundary of the tattoo. Granulomas and keloids are permanent unless you have them surgically removed.

Also, allergic reactions, although rare, can happen.

DON'T get a tattoo on your wrist or lower arms... Especially as a first tattoo. My first tat was a lotus flower on my lower back and it was painful but nothing unbearable. A year later I went back to get something on the inside of my lower arm and the artist talked me out of it.. I ended up getting it on my right upper arm and while I'm glad I didn't get it on my wrist, I do NOT like that tattoo anymore... don't get anything very visible until you are older and mature and in a job field that can allow such a thing. Don't get a tat just cuz its the "cool" thing like a star or a dolphin or whatever... Be sensible... Think things thru... Tattoos require maintenance after you first get them too, so think of that also. Good luck. :)

Get the lower back one first. They don't hurt that bad at all (especially there, or on your upper back. Your back has less nerves in it than other places on your body). You can't hide tattoos on your wrist, and people do judge you on your tats. A lower back tat is awesome because it's easy to show off and easy to hide as well. Just don't get something tribal, for the love of all that's holy!

Pain factor is really not that bad. It's like the feeling of scratching a sunburn, not pleasant but totally acceptable.

my first tattoo was on my lower back and it didnt hurt as much as i thought. when the out line was done three needles were used and this hurt more than the filling in part which used five needles. at first i had a pinching feeling then it started to tickle and some parts felt numb. try to stay relaxed and have a friend with you to keep your mind away from the stinging feeling
good luck with the star

It shouldnt be too bad, but as a rule of thumb a tattoo shoud be more than 2 fingers width from the base of your wrist to get a good heal. Yes it is possible to get a tattoo lower but becuse you use that area so much it is hard for it to heal properly and you may have a splotchy tattoo.

It depends on where you get your tattoo, and how high your pain tolerance is. I myself have a high pain tolerance, and tattoos DO still hurt, but its more of an annoyance, and it just feels like your getting scratched on your skin, which is technically what is happening, only ink is involved. Although i have a large tat on my back and i had to stop and take several cig breaks, i felt like i was about to pass out, due to the inker going over the open wounds, and then I got one on my chest, and i didn't flinch a single time...it depends on your pain tolerance..

I have tattoos in both of those places and the one on my back hurt worse than the one on my inner wrist. The back is right over your spinal cord so you feel it and can actually make you twitch slightly. The inner wrist didn't hurt at all. Good luck.

The outline hurts more than the fill in. Kind of feels like a cat scratch. Not really that bad, but get the one on your back done first.

the one on your lower back will hurt less, but the one on your wrist is gonna hurt a lot. tattoos hurt more where there is less skin or fat, so places like your ankles and wrists hurt more

it all depends on your pain tolerance and the artist. some artists are a little rougher than others. also on your lower back it stings a little when they are on the spine. pretty much anywhere there is a bone it is going to hurt a little more than a non bony place
