Mercy? He already knows I'm a Christian. I know that I'm going to Heaven when I die, so asking God for mercy on my soul is kind of redundant.

Most people who believe in God like to say that God is merciful and kind beyond human comprehension. If that's true then that love would be unconditional and I wouldn't have to ask for it. If it's not true and God has less Love than I do for my own daughter, then I don't care because I have no respect for a God with less compassion than a mere human. An intelligent and compassionate god would know that no matter how many mistakes I made, that I was doing the best I could with what I had at the time. I think it would be better to apologize to the PEOPLE I have harmed along the way and try to help others as best I can while I'm alive.

I don't like asking for a favor at the last minute. It's so petty. Be honorable and stand up. If there is heaven and hell and St. Peter is guarding the door, I will tell him that I did not believe based on the evidence I was exposed to, but lived a pretty normal life. If the hell is the door he choose for me, then so be it. If heaven is full of religious zealots chanting and praising the Lord constantly for eternity, hell doesn't sound like a distant 2nd option.

I would go to Mass and to Confession. Then I would spend the rest of the day saying goodbye to loved ones, praying to God for mercy, and asking the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Michael the Archangel to guard and guide me until death.

Not only do I not believe in God, I don't have a soul. I leave my imagination for my writing and my music. If I were going to die today, I'd want to eat a lobster, bacon, and cheesecake. (While I may not have a soul, I do have cholesterol.)

I'd probably ask instinctively, much like when you are in trouble you say "god, help me out of this mess please", etc.

But it wont do anyone any good, because it is the sum total of all the naughty, nasty, immoral, evil, wicked, heinous, diabolical things you have done in your life that will count. You think they are just forgotten but they are not. You cant just wait till the last minute then say "okay, okay I believe, forgive me, now let me into heavan"
