I actually had one done when I was young and tan and didn't even need makeup. It was pretty cute. I kept that thing for years. Now, driver's license is another matter.

Mine is actually really nice, it is the best one I had in my all life and was very proud to have it on my passport BUT. I had to go for 2 months in the US and applied for a J1 Visa. They asked me a picture, I though "what ever lets send an horrible one for just a 2 months visa". I was soooooooo depressed when I saw them sticking the Visa + this awfull picture on the second page of my passport ! now when I am giving it for some reason people keep looking that page and not the good one !

because they are scanned by a computer and that scan is printed in the passport and the scan data is kept in a microchip in the passport. if you are scanned at a check statation, the data picked up at the check station needs to match the chip in your passport. moving the facial muscles in a smile may alter them enough so it would not match in a comparison of the two. these folks might help if further questions:

Mine looks horrible too...but so far, the most recent passport picture is the best one I've got so I consider myself lucky. Yeah, I don't know why we can't smile either?

Mine is absolutely horrid. I made the people take the photo over and over and over. Literally, we probably took 20 pictures and not one of them was good. I guess not only do we have to be called the "ugly American" by other countries, we have to prove it with our passports.

I think it's a requirement for them to look bad because traveling wears you out. You can't smile in the picture because it alters the shape of your face.

I look 30 pounds heavier and moderately retarded in mine. I don't think it's possible to have a good passport photo. However, my driver's license pic is OK... not good.... just OK.

Definitely not me. I don't like the not smiling part because it reminds me of a mug shot or something. =]
