Of course God gave us free will. But free will doesn't come without consequences. You have the freedom to do the wrong thing but that does mean you won't get punished for it. In Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. God gave them the freedom to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil obviously by putting it there. But He also told them the consequences for disobeying His command "thou shalt not eat of it". God did not lie. By eating the fruit from the forbidden tree Adam and Eve disobeyed God. They therefore were cast from the garden of Eden and became mortal beings. They no longer walked with God. They no longer had Eternal Life therefore the equivalant of Death!
