Taknev is right. They WILL send you a free CD. I requested 15 copies of Edubuntu (Ubuntu for Education) and they just sent them. I received 2 weeks ago FREE. ( I just had to pay $6 at my post office for taxes) Ubuntu is very adaptable. I used the same CD to install it in a partition of my PC desktop(x586 AMD AthlonXP) and also in my laptop AMD64 Turion) They work perfect. It recognized hardware in both and showed no problems of configuration. When you install, have your internet ready so you can install other software and updates.
Update: I made a little extra research. Maybe you can install using a floppy. Check for this websites:

If your PC has USB ports, and you have USB flash pen you might download or install it in your flash drive instead, and from there to your PC:

Just one note: For each linux user the "best" distro is perhaps the one he himself uses. This is a preference that depends on many factors: knowledge, which one you started using first, resources, compatibility, familiarity etc. etc. I prefer Debian-based distributions. I use Debian Sarge as my basis. If you are a New Linux user, I really, really recommend you Ubuntu. It's taken as the best at the moment for its easiness to use, adaptability and regular updates.

I think you're bummed unless you know someone who'd burn a copy of a free linux (Ubuntu, Kubintu, Xubuntu, Fedora, etc.) for you... Unless you change your mind about shippings.
