ok i have posted a few before about my little puppy having a large deer tick on him in which i pulled out with tweezers. the vet said he should be fine, yet i found a raised flakey sort of whitish redish bump almost the size of a dime in a circular shape that is somehwat hard where the tick was. i was wondering if this is the sign of an infection or lyme disease. i am very worried. can someone please shed some light on this matter

The early signs of Lyme disease are loss of appetite, fever, and lethargy. Lameness is also a good indicator of this disease. Skin signs are very rare with this disease. The symptoms are usually delayed for several months, but start to show symptoms at about 2 months after exposure and should show up in about 5-6 months from the day he was biten (if the tick carried Lyme Disease). Only about 1% of deer ticks actually carry the Lyme disease organism, so I wouldn't worry so much. It is probably just a reaction to the tick bite, kinda like humans get. It is usually a red, raised, itchy bump but will go away in about 2 weeks or so.

Your puppy could have had an allergic reaction to the tick bite, or you could have accidentally left the head of the tick embedded in the skin. If you're really worried, the vet can do a blood test for Lyme disease. That's the only way to know for sure. In the meantime, you can put some cortisone cream on it or some Benadryl gel, that may help the swelling go down.

If you have any doubts whatsoever, I'd take him to the vet -- getting it taken care of now might save both you and him a lot of pain, heartache and expenses. Even if it's not Lyme, it sounds like the area might be infected -- maybe you didn't get all of the tick out -- sometimes part of the head or body get stuck beneath the skin -- that is the downside to removing them with tweezers -- and can causes problems. I'd have it looked at.

For future reference, you might want to try using a flea/tick collar on him (not to be used on very young puppies; ask your vet or read the instructions) or an oil that you apply to the tape of his neck (and, if a large dog, right above the tail)

Good luck to you and your pup! :)
