To claim yourself as independent, you must meet several criteria including no one claiming you on their income tax filing, being over age 24 if not in graduate school, self supporting (meaning an income), be married, have a minor child, or have left the military. The best thing is to talk to your college's financial aid office to see if you meet the criteria in case if I missed something. In response to your question, yes you possibly could receive more in financial aid if your income is lower than your parents.

FAFSA depends on your income level. You must include your parents income as well unless you are married, have a child or are over 23 years of age.

I believe you can. I have claimed myself independent for a few years now and this year I got financial aid. If you're still not sure try visiting their site. www.fafst.org.
