It depends. In Japanese, you have a choice of either native-based or Japanese-based numbers below:

1. 一 ichi OR hitotsu
2. 二 ni OR futatsu
3. 三 san OR mittsu
4. 四 shi OR yottsu
5. 五 go OR itsutsu
6. 六 roku OR muttsu
7. 七 shichi OR nanatsu
8. 八 hachi OR yattsu
9. 九 kyuu OR kokonotsu
10. 十 juu or too

But Japanese takes it a step further. Depending on what you're counting, you have to use different numbers.

If you are counting people then you'd go hitori, futari, sannin, yonnin, etc. You'd use different numbers for counting small animals, slender objects, books, years, etc.
