Maui, Hawaii. for me, it was over 10 hours of flying, but it is so worth it. it was beautiful and serene. not only is the secenery different from the surburbian area i live in, but hte people are so much more relaxed than my area is. Everyone there is polite, patient, and just plain sweet. if i could reccomend you a place to go, it would be there.
in addition, im the type of person who likes to actually do things while im on vacation, and on Maui we took the road to Hana (a beautiful drive through all these natural parks), watched the sunrise on top of a volcano and biked down the volcano, drove around the island, snorkeled, and so much more. to me, maui is like a civilization completly different from my own... and in every way better :) (execpt for my friends of course)

For peaceful self-indulgence, Bermuda - in the off-season.
Beautiful pink beaches, BLUE water, a sense of safety. The school kids were all wearing uniforms, looking healthy, and well-cared for.
For living outside myself, Colonia Vicente Guerrero, in Baja. Twice to build houses (11' x 22') for 3-generational familes and visit the orphanage. Great sunsets there, too.

+ Probably Roratua, It is a lake area in the middle of the north island of New Zealand about half way between Napier and Wellington. The view is magnificent, and some of the geothermal pools look like rainbow colors as you look down into them. Also a great place for fishing.

Alaska. Mountains so tall you have to look up to see the peaks 200 miles away, skies in a deep blue - a color you never knew existed, air so fresh that the first couple of breaths you take in Alaska actually hurt. When you visit Alaska, a part of you never leaves...
