It may be the place you are attending. I've been to churches like this before and find it off putting.
Trust me, there are churches out there who do not do this and I don't agree with this kind of pressure.

Tithing is too vague. 10% of your gross or net income? I don't think its fair to say how much one has to give. Besides, back when they were talking about tithing, weren't they tithing animals? Weren't there less expenses for people back then?
I give what I feel comfortable giving. I do not live a life of luxury, and have expenses. I am not a material person, but we have a mortgage and other expenses like everyone else so I give what I can even if it means time or volunteer for other charity work. Jesus says "What you do for the least of them you do for me" so I hope that counts for something, because 10% of our income is not easily given away right now. It also doesn't take into account children in the household, and food expenses for a family etc. How is it that a couple making $100,000 and a family of 5 making $100,000 would all be expected to pay the same percent? And how are your blessings given a price tag?
Where I used to go to church they had a rundown organ and no ac with wooden pews that killed your back...but we helped get a plane of medical supplies to people who needed it most in Honduras after the plane needed pricey repairs. I like that. I wouldn't go to a church gilded with marble and fine things because I'd know exactly where my money was going...on some gaudy uneeded decorations. Church shouldn't be a palace, I'd rather see the money go to those who need it!

Planting seeds and tithing are two different things.
Tithing is giving a tenth of your income to the church. In the Bible, which we should follow, it says that if you do not tithe than you are robbing God.
On the the other hand seed planting is not Biblical and is a form of robbery. It robs people of their means because the minister or whoever is telling people that the more they give the more they will be blessed. This is not Biblical!!

Not really an answer, but an extension of the question which I would like to inquire.
1. To my limited knowledge, Tithes and Offerings were mentioned in the last book of the old testament, Is there any other verses in the new testament that mention them as a requirement or is an encourgaed practice?
2. If only the old testament mentioned it, why not abolish it like the abolishing of no eatting unclean meat and a tide of other "old rules" that are wiped out by the grace of the lamb's sacrifice?

I never hear a sermon on tithing at my church. I have seen televangelists giving quite lengthy sermons on tithing, and I always turn the channel. That annoys me.
Perhaps you need to try a different church that is about more than money.

Cause you're going to the wrong church.
They might need money for a good cause ... like keeping the church open ... but your love is pure spirit ... give if you can , but you can also find a church that is more spiritual.
Or, maybe you can't ... this church might be filled with spirit and just poor. Anyway don't feel obligated to give ... unless it's easy for you ... God doesn't get the money ... and He doesn't need it. OK
Yours,
Jonnie

Because as much as we all hate to think about it, churches have to pay their bills as well. How do you think it gets paid? The bigger the church, the bigger the bills, the more we hear about tele-evangilists (sp?) going to jail for theft.
I left the Christian community when all I saw were money grubbing pastors. I know there are good ones out there, but all I ran across were the bad ones, I figured God was trying to tell me something...

Most churches say that you should tithe to give back to God all thats hes given to you and He will bless you with more. Personally, I believe that strongly, but I think you should pray about this and let God tell you what to do. Everyone has individual convictions they need to deal with.

Because it's technically a part of certain religions. For example, Mormons dictate that a certain % of your pay must go to the church. Catholics pass the donation tray or basket and let public shame do the rest. Religion isn't free, apparently.

this is true ...only you and the lord know your true relationship with the savior...and remember the lady that just had two pennies to give in to the collection plate...i do not have money except hardly to pay my bills and there is many things i need...but i am thankfull to god for what i have...many churches just want to make their church nicer and spend money on things that is really not needed...so give what you can and do the best you can..you know if your heart is right with god...there was this church one time that thought my mother should give her 10 percent to the church but she helped her children out sometimes instead...and they thought that was wrong...i do not believe she did wrong at all....and i know i thank god for the help she gave me and i know god knows her heart when she was helping her children....
