Here is a link to a chart with standard US clothes sizes:

http://www.biz.uiowa.edu/class/6m105/projects/fabfit/size.htm#chart

Just wondering how your clothes size that you normally wear actually compares to the size you would be from the chart? Is it bigger, smaller or the same?

TIA

The chart is not inaccurate, these are the true standard sizes, which many retailers choose to ignore. A true size 0 would be a 22/23 inch waist, yet retailers often put their size 0 clothing as a 25/26 inch waist!!

Seems like it varies. For me I found I usually wear smaller than the size stated and others seem to have found the opposite. I guess it probably depends on where you shop?

Presently I wear size 12 -- same as the chart.

In the old days that size 12 would have been a size 14. I guess as Americans got bigger, the manufacturers resized the clothes. I have suspected this.

Explanation: When I was young and 35 25 35 I always wore size 12. Now that I am old and 36 31 37 I still buy and fit size 12 .

I'm living in Japan and none of the charts compare to the supposed American and European sizes. A "c" cup bra here is between an "A" and "B" cup size in Europe. Also the proportions are weird. All dresses have the waist practically under the armpits and jeans have no room for a bum to go in them.
I can only buy imports which cost a fortune here and sometimes you find what fits you in Britain from a clothing company doesn't fit you in Japan as it's been altered for the Japanese market.
So I think there is no reliable chart in existence.

This is sort of like the UK sizing system because a 2 in the US is like a size 6 in the UK.

Kind of depressing because I usually wear a size 2 but it says here that I'm a size 6. I'm a size 6 at H&M, so maybe they use this system.

Seems to me like it runs a bit bigger. I know my measurements and I wear a larger size than what it is stating.
