What is the meaning of free climbing in the sport of rock climbing?

No ropes, no ties or no clips, just your fingers, toes and a mind of steal holding you to the rock.

Most of these answers are describing *free soloing*, which is climbing without protection (i.e. ropes). Free climbing is climbing using gear *only* as protection (i.e. if you fall, the rope will keep you attached to an anchor just below you), as opposed to *aid climbing*, where you can place gear in the wall and use it to pull yourself up.

climbing on rock with no rope attached to climber is free climbing. very high risk of injury or death but a complete mind format.it might look easy at none vertical or easy routes but you may jam on the route and thats when that u r in trouble. decent on such routes is usually harder than climbing.(down climb is much harder than ascent)

i must state that I'm no climber, but many years ago i trained with marine recon units and i was instructed to climb rock faces without any safety ropes or fall supports and was inform red that this was considered to be free climbing.

free climbing is when there is nothing saving you if you fall while your climbing
