People dress casual at my church. Even the pastors wear jeans alot.
Personally, I think that if I dress up for a date, I can dress up for God. I even make sure my underclothes are in good shape! It's something that is just between me & God and no one even knows. I also have to admit that sometimes I wear a pretty sweater if I'm ushering, in case I happen to meet my 2nd husband that day. :-)

You are 100% correct! I mean, there's nothing wrong with dressing up all perty if you want for church, but those churches that have a "dress code" type thing? They're full of religious blahness (<----nice word eh?) Anyway, I had a pastor once, who said that if someone comes to church in jeans, a T-shirt, and bare feet, then we'll see him coming to church with jeans, a T-shirt, and bare feet. It's all about the heart, right on.

In our society we dress up for formal or important events. Different churches have different unspoken or spoken 'dress codes'. In different societies there are different expectations. Mostly its because you are making a formal declaration that you take this seriously by taking the time to dress nicely. Same reason married people dress up when they go on a date. Because they want the other person (in the church God is the 'other person' the Church is the Bride of Christ after all) to know that they care about them enough to dress up. God, and any decent church, will accept any one, regardless of how they are dressed, into a worship service. God will clothe His children in robes of spotless white in Heaven, what we wear on earth is just another way to express our reverance, love, familiarity, and/or comfort with God and His (our) family. For some that's hawaian shirts and shorts, for others thats suits and ties.

It probably all has roots back in the earlier days of the Church, when royalty would be wearing all kinds of fancy stuff to show the commoners how much better-off the nobility was, and people always tried to imitate nobility. I think it just sort of continued from there, even after more people were able to afford fancy clothes. And like the others said, dressing up for Church is not as common as it used to be.

God DOES look to the inside of the person, whereas those who like to think they are "going to god's house," pride themselves on looking on things outside of the person, and they hope to be judged on external things as well. They don't care about impressing God with their outward apparel, but rather they want to impress one another with their self-righteousness. It is the same today in the mainstream "religions" as it was in the day of the Lord, when he upbraided the scribes and Pharisees for being "like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity." Read on. It's all explained in words anyone can understand.

That is very true. I don't think you have to dress up to go to church. I dress up simply because I like to wear nice clothes and don't really have any other place to wear them.

It's called PRIDE. They don't believe in God, they believe in being BETTER than everyone else. Does God really care if you're a gazabillionaire or a hobo? No. But does Donald Trump care about it if someone compared him to a hobo, you bet your butt he will. Christianity has been dead for a long time.

Wow. Let me just say that yes God reads hearts but he also would like people who are representing him to do that to the best of their ability as all things done for or because of God should be done with the best of our ability.
The bible tells us to dress modestly and to be clean and not to be showy ,but it does not say to wear any old thing God won,t care.

I think it's out of respect that you should dress up for church. Afterall, don't you dress up for that extra special date, or don't you dress up when you attend a wedding or go to a nice restaurant? You are right, God does not care if you attend church services wearing rags, but really, do you really want to wear rags?

You are right, and nowa days where I live, more and more churches are allowing people to come to church dressed casually.
