So dumb. My neighbor is a Scientologist and told me to quit my ADD meds, she says that diet and exercise and of course giving her little cult hundreds of dollars will cure me. I have tried everything under the sun, diet, exercise and they have improved my condition slightly, but overall medicine and therapy are huge in my treatment.

Why do these cult members who have no experience with ADHD ranting about it? I wonder why L Ron Hubbards son committed suicide.

The “church” has taken a very hostile stance towards psychiatry and psychiatric drugs irrespective of the fact that some people require medication to remain adequately functional in everyday life. The "church" has been known to withhold prescription pharmaceuticals from member (with deadly results). See this link for more details: http://theunfunnytruth.ytmnd.com/

The Church of Scientology rejects the claim that what are commonly called "mental illnesses" have a biological basis, holding that such conditions are exclusively mental and spiritual problems which Scientology can correct.

Critics of Scientology have pointed out that Hubbard asked in 1947 for psychiatric care, and that the coroner found after his death that Hubbard had been injected with the psychiatric tranquilizer Vistaril.

Scientology is undeniably a cult. Every cult can be defined as a group having all of the following five characteristics:

(1) It uses psychological coercion to recruit, indoctrinate and retain its members [convincing potential members that they are unhappy and Scientology is the only means of helping themselves]. (2) It forms an elitist totalitarian society. [they label everyone who disagrees or questions as a “Suppressive Person” and requires members to “disconnect” from them] (3) Its founder leader is self-appointed, dogmatic, messianic, not accountable and has charisma. [Yes, that would be Hubbard] (4) It believes 'the end justifies the means' in order to solicit funds & recruit people. (5) Its wealth does not benefit its members or society. [self evident proof for 4 & 5 as it does milk members for virtually everything they have and it’s wealth doesn’t find it’s way back to it’s members or society at all]

Cults are extremely harmful. To remain within the strict mental and social confines of a cult for even a short time can have the following disastrous effects:

Loss of choice and free will. Diminished intellectual ability, vocabulary and sense of humor. Reduced use of irony, abstractions and metaphors. Reduced capacity to form flexible and intimate relationships. Poor judgment. Physical deterioration. Malnutrition. Hallucinations, panic, dissociation, guilt, identity diffusion and paranoia. Neurotic, psychotic or suicidal tendencies.

Lots of people have 'theories' that mental illness isn't a physical phenomenon. Today, most mental illnesses have been shown to have a real, chemical and physical cause. Some of these are worsened by bad diet and poor exercise, but that doesn't diminish the fact that the real cause lies in the physiology of the brain. If it weren't so, then everyone following the specific diet and exercise patterns of those so afflicted, would become afflicted themselves.

Scientology believes that the cause of mental illness is Ennegrams, or thought patterns that are defective. They believe that if they can change these patterns, the person becomes 'clear' and asymptomatic. Some people following these practices have shown relief, but faith healers seem to heal people too. The question is: how sick were these people really?

Some people behave as if they have ADD, but may simply be undisciplined. Unqualified persons, or lazy ones, rather than saying this person needs to be imparted a certain amount of discipline, say they have ADD.

The interesting thing about real ADD is that a drug, which is normally a stimulant to most people, actually calms somebody with ADD down a bit. Many people with ADD find that coffee or caffienated beverages help them sleep at night. This alone shows that there is something different in the brain of these people.

So, listen to your doc, politely thank the neighbor for their advice, and do what you know is right.

I know vertially nothing about Mr Hubbard and scientology, but here's a possibility. Maybe they are only saying that meds may stabilize you but not cure you. I know in the past that many meds have "unusual" side effects, which can be de-stabilizing. Interesting choice, isn't it, whether to medicate or refrain. I'd keep searching for more information on what may be causing your pain, you know, the underlying psychological reason, if you can. Sure, talk to your therapist, but research a cure on your own too. Sometimes through prayer and meditation, a cure can be felt. Sometimes a good massage can help immensely as well. Try it if you haven't, ok? Helps flush out the system and relax the mind. Relaxed minds can intuit more easily the cure. Don't give up hope for a better tomorrow. Wished I could be more helpful.

As the creator of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard said "I’d like to start a religion. That’s where the money is." If you notice....other religions are not in it to make money. Normal churches run off the charity of others, they don't demand money. And if the church is a good church (regardless of the religious affiliation) it would only take the charity and put the money back into running the church. No church should ever tell you to pay them to "cure you" the idea is just ridiculous. Remember when the Catholic church sold indulgences to "cure" people of their sins. It was highly criticized and changes were made so that this would never happen again.

maybe because if you stop taking your medication, and are given no other options for treatment, suddenly scientology will look like an answer and you (not you but some people may) will look to to scientology which is not a free religion, you will have to pay, pay with your money, and maybe end up paying with your life
when tom cruise brought up the issue on national tv it upset me very much, because i suddenly saw all the young girls who worshiped him thinking that it would be a good idea to stop taking any medication they were taking, or worse, never seeking help for a condition they might have
ive struggled for years with anxiety, depression and other mental disorders and i know first hand how hard it is to find the medication thats right for you, and that for the longest time it might seem like none work, but that you have to see different doctors and just keep trying
so i guess what im trying to say is that sure, diet and excercise will always help slightly but it is very very dangerous to suddenly stop taking any kind of medication without the supervision of a doctor, you can actually go into shock which happened to me because of a very ignorant doctor
scientology is dangerous, and im glad its contained for now

Because Scientology can't make a profit off of them like they can the sale of their classes and the "levels" that must be attained/purchased within the religion by their church members. Nice, huh?
