When people ask for encouragement about getting their wisdom teeth out, I like to share this story about my three children.
I removed two of my older daughter's wisdom teeth at 2:00 in the afternoon and told her to go home and lie down until dinner time. Before I got home, she had already left for the mall! I was rather angry, because I figured that she'd be moaning all night long and asking me what to do for the pain. Much to my happy surprise, she seemed just fine. She said that she waited until the numbness started to go away and she felt pretty good, so she decided to get up and go.
Same thing with my son. We were actually headed home from a drum lesson and he asked if we could stop in the office to check out the sore place in his mouth. It turned out to be an erupting wisdom tooth. He asked if I felt like taking it out right then, so I did. (I was afraid he might change his mind if he thought about it overnight.) His mom didn't even know he had a wisdom tooth taken out until he had to take the gauze out of his mouth to eat dinner. His uppers were both kind of difficult and he had trouble healing with one of them (sinus involvement), but that didn't last for more than 3 or 4 days.
With my third child, I took her to the oral surgeon, because the roots were sort of close to the nerve and _I_ didn't want to be the one to cause her any trouble if things got difficult. She had nitrous oxide and little bit of iv sedation and had all four removed at once. I wanted to get her right home, but she asked me to stop off at the mall before we went home. She insisted that she was okay. Instead of going home and lying down, she walked through the mall. Yes, she was biting on her gauze packs (in the mall!), but still she was a lot more active than I would recommend. She had no trouble at all healing. I think she went out that night, too. (It was 1999, so I don't remember the details.)
I'm not saying that they are ALL like this, but there are wisdom teeth and then there are w*!`S^D@m TEETH!!! I always say that wisdom teeth (and root canals, by the way) are like teenagers. At least 90% are no trouble at all, but everybody talks about the bad ones.

I did not feel a thing! I was put to sleep and had all four of mine
out. When I woke up, my mouth was full of cotton. I was talking like this.... blahh wah mah sswwah ahh nahh wwehaw. ....I was
like this for at least a day. After a day or two, I noticed four large
holes where the teeth were. Over tim, the holes filled in with gum skin. The holes are very small now, but still there.
Don't worry. You will be OK. Nothing hurts if you get put to sleep. You walk in. Sit down. They put you to sleep and that is it.
You'll make it......

They will give you good drugs and you really wont feel anything until the drugs wear off. They gave me pain pills and I really don't remember anything for the next 3 days. I don't even remember using the bathroom. My wisdom teeth were impacted so when the packing (gauze) came out there were craters in my gums. Huge holes. The roots of the tooth had wrapped around a major nerve so I do have a little numbness in my bottom lip and the feeling will never return. It is no picnic.... but you will survive!

Good luck and do not be scared! I had all four of mine pulled out at the same time. It was not bad at all and I am a pansy about things like that. I had some facial swelling and could not eat or drink anything with a straw for awhile. Also if you smoke, do not smoke until they are healed you do not want to get a dry socket! Just do what the doc tells ya and you will be fine! :)

About 3-5 days of aching jaws and gums. Nothing that can't be taken care of with Tylenol #3 or even Percocet(Vicodan) if it's too much.
As the gums heal, you may get an odd taste for a few months.
Overall, this is nothing drastic in 'the Big Leagues' so I wouldn't get too twisted up over it.
You'll do fine.

I would rather have my tonsils taken out again than have my wisdom teeth taken out again. My recovery from my tonsillectomy was 1 and 1/2 months and my recovery from having my wisdom teeth taken out was only one week. Good luck!

expect to not be eating anything except mush for a few days......and to have open bloody holes in your mouth in which food gets stuck in and you will have to squirt it out with a syringe-the pain wasn't too bad for the ones i had pulled but 2 i had cut out by oral surgeon--that hurt and i cried although i was 25 years old at the time--its not the worst experience but def. not the best either--good luck and dont forget to eat all of your favorite things b4 morning--last chance for a while-

When your young the pain is Much less than when you get older and the teeth have time to grow the nerves fully. As a 14 year old it would hurt but not for long. TRUST me; the pain later is MUCH more.

it depends on how solid the root structure is in your teeth, but not that bad. they will put you out for it, and they will give you a good script for lortabs or other such pain meds.
when i had mine out i had only local anesthetic and no prescription for any pain meds. (i was fresh out of rehab) surprisingly, it wasn't so bad.
two days later i went back to school and two weeks later i could eat all of the ice cream i wanted.
good luck.

Don't be worried. It doesn't hurt much at all...I went to the pool the same day! You will be okay to go out, but shouldn't drive. Also...you'll get some great painkillers. Enjoy!
