is there any way possible w/o expensive modifications to play PAL DVDs? I've tried my DVD player, Media Center, Realplayer,etc.

Look closely on ebay for older DVD players that are Region 0 -- they'll play any region DVD in any format. My roommate got his for less than $40. It's old and won't play DVDs with lots of fancy menus (it pops up the subtitles out of nowhere sometimes), but he's able to play DVDs from overseas without any problem (for example, we already have The Descent).

Many computer-based DVD players will play both PAL and NTSC discs.

Multi-region DVD players, PAL DVD players (I actually wasnt aware that PAL players existed)

From what I know PAL refers more to the TV your playing on & its refresh rate

you can select AUTO instead PAL, SECAM, or NTSC. If this doesn't work, blame The North American standard who very like to be different than all the world standard.
