I work in a salon downtown. I get asked for money everyday!!!I just tell them that I don't have any money to spare (I am in debt from school and don't have any extra money to give away to strangers). Sometimes I will buy them food, most of the time they won't take it for some reason LOL!
I do get agitated when asked to just hand away my hard earned cash!. I work very hard for my money (standing for up to 13 hours a day). I feel that most of the time they put themselves in this situation. It is rare that someone just loses it all by some uncontrollable situation, most of the time it is jail, drugs, or alcohol that has taken over their lives. I feel that I am just aiding in there downward spiral if I give them cash to spend on what they choose. I do give to charities and shelters often, this is how I feel I am doing my part. Offer them food, clothing, blankets or point them to the nearest shelter, that is the best way to help.

Hi sometimes if I have spare change readily available (like in my pocket) I will give it to them. But most of the time I just tell them "sorry I don't have any spare change on me". It seems to work just fine for me.

just tell them no. i have first hand experience with a lot of these street people and trust me the major percentage of them just want drugs or alcohol. they can tell you some very sad stories and that is just what they are. stories. if you think i'm too harsh give them some money and drive around a corner and watch what they spend it on.

As I see it you have three choices:
1. Give them some spare change
2. Ignore them
3. Give food coupons like for mcDonalds

it quite is apples to oranges, my guy, yet right here is going: The bum needs a meal and a job. The flesh presser needs to get the planet in his steely draw close. i might say the flesh presser is far worse.

I would give change if I had it right in my pocket. I also like Elna W's idea of McDonalds coupons.

Do what I do - ask them for spare change first! It throws then into such confusion that sometimes they actually give it to you!

Put them on a 'bus' and 'float' them to Ethiopia where its cheaper to feed everyone
