it's called hallucination. nothing more.
when the body is near death, many people are medicated. others have extraordinary sensory occurrences considering the massive trauma their bodies are under, and their brains vary in perception and cognition.

Years ago I heard about a doctor that performed an experiment. He put a message on a piece of paper visible only from the ceiling. I think it was on top of a light fixture. Anyone 'floating' above the theater should be able to read it.
I haven't heard the result, if any. As far as I know, he's still waiting for someone to 'see' it.
But it IS strange that someone's senses would expand under oxygen deprivation.

Near death experiences are thought to be figments of the imagination. A person is not quite dead with this experience. They are in an altered state. It's possible that some of the five senses are heightened, especially the hearing, sense of smell, taste and touch.

Carelessness usually. Read the instructions and follow the safety rules. Most near death experiences can be avoided.

Some people do not believe in an after life. So here are a few examples of those NDE to think about.

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" Romans 3:23
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Romans 10:9-10

You've already answered your own question, but to reiterate what you already know, there is no way to say with absolute certainty what another person is experiencing inside their own head. Therefore, it's impossible to confirm the validity of these peoples claims. In the absence of verifiable evidence, we must assume their claims to be false.
Perhaps the day will come when science can "kill" people and then revive them, and then you will have your answer.

There is life after death. When someone is near death, his spirit gets our of the body and starts to see many images about his past. Usually they see a light and after the light relatives that have died. (My e.mail Argentox2@yahoo.com).
