From what you know, what do you think the most spoken language is? I'm taking a poll, and please don't go searching on the site or looking at other people's answer. Just type in a simple language, and you will get +2 points. I'll pick the 10 points to the one who adds why, no matter how wrong they are!

The most spoken NATIVE language (two people speaking to each other in the language native to both of them) is Mandarin Chinese --by a small margin.

But the international language is English, so if you add in the conversations between people using English to communicate, I think you'll find that English is the most common language, and it is going to grow in its usage and power as the world becomes more international in nature. Furthermore, the population of India is growing rapidly and will overcome that of China; English is the most common foreign language learned in India.

One of the reasons for English ascending to the top is that the news broadcast and printed in English is believed in the world, especially in planned economies and dictatorships. Worldwide, people believe the BBC more than their local radio station. And they want to know what's "really" happening, and knowledge and fluency in English opens that door.

My observation is that once people learn English fluently, they become more and more comfortable with it --and-- that means they raise their children with it; this is another reason is will soon surpass Mandarin.

The Chinese language in general (regardless of dialect) is the most widely spoken language in the world. This is because China has the biggest population compared to other countries in the world. The United States only comes third, the second is India.

it depends: If you mean a native language, it surely is mandarin (800 million ppl, out of the 1.3 billion chinese citizens)
But if you dont mean a native language but just a language i think the most spoken one is English (in some cases, actually in most cases, as a second language)
India has the second largest population (1.1B) but there are many dialects in that country so the most spoken language in India must have around 500M speakers.
But remember that love is the one language we all (6.5B ppl around the world) speak as an inborn language.

it's english. think about it, it's not just the americans speak english, there's the canadians, british, and a whole lot of other european countries. even though china has the greatest population(1.3 billion), the chinese language is still not the most spoken one(but i speak it lol). in fact, most of the chinese stuff in china, now has english translation on it, thats how common english is in ppl's mind now.
