It's a search of a cell, a tier (a row of cells), a block (a group of tiers) or the entire facility. It's done to ensure there's no illegal contraband - i.e: weapons, drugs, booze, money, excess or unauthorized clothing (which was probably the case with your friend), escape paraphernalia, and any thing else an inmate is not allowed to have. Often it's done following a disturbance or if a disturbance or some other action detrimental to the security and order of the facility is suspected. Single cell searches are done as a matter of routine.

Basically a shakedown is where inmates, their living area, and common areas are searched for contraband. Contraband is an item issued by the state that an inmate has an excessive amount of, an item that has been altered, an item that has not been issued by the state, any type of item that can be used as a weapon, any drug items that an has not been issued or received from medical personnel or bought from the inmate store, any type of books that show penetration of the vagina or anal area, any child pornographic matierial, pages torn from magazines, empty containers, etc. The list can go on and on---
A shakedown is mostly conducted to keep excessive amount of contraband from coming into the prison.
Staff members of the prison are shakedown randomly as well as the inmates.

Inmates are asked to stand outside of their cells while the guards search their cells, from top to bottom. At the same time, the guards watching over the inmates outside of their cells, search them too.
This is usually done a few times a year to try and keep illegal items, out of the prison. It doesn't always work.

IT usually means a total search of the inmates and their cells for contraband of any type. IT may also be restrictions placed above and beyond the normal security practices (less time out of cells) to bring order to a disruptive population.

That is where corrections officers, like myself, go into a area or a cell and search for contraband items, (items they are not permitted to have) we also search the inmates , thier living areas, common areas such as rec yards, day rooms, dining facilities.

could use a little more info here........are you referring to inmate on inmate? that would be one inmate demanding commissary items or illegal items from another inmate. if it is officers, it is a very thorough search of a cell and the inmate to confiscate contraband. if contraband is found, the inmate will have a "case", which depending on the contraband will result in loss of priviledges, good time lost, parole put off, or additional charges filed

I think a shake down is when Elvis sings Jail House Rock. Seems to me there was a lot of shaking when he sang that in prison.

Inmates are locked in their cells and everything is searched. Usually it is caused by drugs or weapons being suspected to be somewhere. People forget that inmates pay big for goodies like drugs and alcohol and guards like the extra income now and then.
