It's a Zucchetto, and it's a traditional item of dress for Catholic clergy. Bishops and above wear it during parts of Mass.

I think that he wears an yarmulke because he doesn´t know it is a Jewish covering.
And, perhaps because he doesn´t wish to exhibit his bald spot (no irreverence meant).
