Tattoos age with you, so eventually they will need some "love" in the future, especially colored ones.
I have a medium sized one (a couple others, too) on my delt and it is beginning to fade, but I like to stay tan and work outside without a shirt when weather allows. The sun can beat them up pretty good after while. The worst color, I think would be yellow, it fades pretty quick.
As far as SHOULD you get one? Hell yeah! But it's your choice and yours alone. The amount of pain involved depends a lot on where you get it. Bony areas, and areas with less muscle or fat under your skin tend to be a lot more sensitive and painful.
Outlining the tat is the painful part. By the time they start filling it in you are pretty much numb to the pain. Just remember that it will be there forever, unless you want to spend loads of money trying to remove it later. If you aren't sure, don't waste your money.
Also, don't let someone else pressure you into getting something. IT'S ALL UP TO YOU.
Go check out the drawings and stuff at your local shops, look on the web, or if you're a good artist you can really make a tat your own by designing one yourself.

Whatever you do, don't get your first tattoo on the back of your neck. It is impossible to cover most of the time. You will want to start with something you can easily hide. A lot of people make value judgments based on your tats, so you'll want to start with something small and easy to hide until you decide whether or not you're up for that.
Doesn't hurt much at all. Highly recommended, but don't get something off of a wall, or for the love of God a tribal/Celtic tattoo or a character in another language. Think for about six months about what you want, then draw it (or have someone draw it) and look at it every day for a few months. If you still like it, you're probably good with it.

Why do you want a tattoo? I have over 20 of them. The reason i ask is this...if you dont know IF you should get one and you dont know what you want on you then why bother? Not trying to be mean but here is the thing. It is gonna be on your forever. It needs to be something you are really into and will be into for the rest of your life. If you arent so into something that you dont even need a suggestion of what to get then i would say no you should not get one. And if you need to ask if you should get one then i would say no. I wish i did not have all of mine.
If you go ahead and get one then dont put it on the back of your neck. It will show and some day you might want to hide it and wont be able to. Get it on your hip or somewhere else that you can cover even if you have on shorts.
Make sure you see some of the artist's work first also. He should have a photo album. Do NOT put anything on your skin first or drink or take drugs except tylenol. Tattoo artists dont like to work on skin of people who have done any of the above. Drinking and aspirin make you bleed too much.
Take a sewing needle and scrape it across your skin real hard and see if you can handle it.

Please consider this:
Tattooing has been banned in some states for health and safety reasons. Unsterile tattooing equipment can transmit infections, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C and even HIV. The risk is so significant that the American Association of Blood Banks requires a one-year wait between getting a tattoo and donating blood.
Q: What signs of infection should someone who has been tattooed watch for?
A: Increased pain, tenderness, swelling, heat around the tattoo site, red streaks, pus, swollen lymph nodes - all of these are signs that you need to see a doctor for antibiotics.
Q: What other risks are involved?
A: You could get granulomas, little nodules that can form around the tattoo, or keloid scar formation. Some people are prone to developing these keloid scars, which grow beyond the boundary of the tattoo. Granulomas and keloids are permanent unless you have them surgically removed.
Also, allergic reactions, although rare, can happen.

I have 4 tattoos, and honestly I do regret them now. Lucky for me they are in spots I can hide, but there have been times I wished I didnt have them. If you really want one, I suggest you go to the tattoo parlor, pick one out, then go home for say a week. Go back to the shop and look at the one you chose. If you still love it, go for it. Don't pick one on a whim. If you change your mind years down the road....hey, live and learn. Another thing I'd recommend if you are nervous about the pain-have the tattoo artist use an empty needle at first, that way if you can't handle the pain and stop him/her, you dont have a black dot tattoo forever!

Colored tats do require some maintenance throughout the years. I think tats are personal, I couldn't imagine telling you what to get. It should mean something profound to you, that way you won't regret it when you're 80.
