I'm in favor of school uniforms.
First of all, it creates a feeling of unity among the students and fighting inside the school is minimized.
Second, less money is spent on clothes and deciding what to wear each day.
Third, it keeps the students who are poor and can't afford name brand jeans and $1000 sneakers from feeling disadvantaged and the rich from feeling too superior.
Fourth, It builds team spirit for academics instead of just sports or clubs.
Fifth, it makes it more difficult for an outside "terrorist" type to enter the school without being recognized as "not belonging"...a uniform is more easy to recognize and to remember than a name tag.
Sixth, it keeps students wearing clothes that are safe and appropriate so that more time can be spent on academics rather than scoping out the opposite sex or worrying about safety...i.e. tripping on baggy pants or falling off a high heal.
Some people argue that uniforms diminish individuality and style but style and individuality shines through in more creative ways than clothes. I think its time to return to a more structured dress code in schools...I'm a liberal and I say this. I just like that it breaks down the class barrier and intimidation that kids can feel at school. We're all in school to learn, not to flaunt our riches and belittle others with our stylish dress. It would be good for the education of American children in the long run.

Major pros- fair play for the less fortunate child- he/she no longer feels "inadequately dressed" compared to the rich kids, and guess what, the parents can rest easy because they don't have to spend their christmas club money to clothe the kids for school, or listen to them cry about their clothes compared to what the "other" kids are wearing. For the rich, well, bling can dress that uniform and show their status quo--- so I give ***** for the uniform program- ps- the not so great teachers can keep their eyes on the books instead of the skirts, because there are no more!

Pros: If done properly, it has been shown to decrease many different behavioral problems in schools, and puts children who can't afford the name brands to be on the same level as everyone else.
Cons: Many public schools will have an "opt out" policy... making uniforms somewhat pointless. Also, if the uniforms are not standardized (through one company that everyone must get their clothes), you will still get name brand khakis, blue collared shirts, etc.
