For a supposedly benign religion with an all-loving God - why do christians think only they can go to Heaven. Surely it is about the goodness of the soul, not whether you believe in a book that was written hundreds of years ago?

I agree. I cannot believe that a religion with an all-loving God would leave people out just because they are sceptical or think slightly differently, especially if they are essentially a good person. If there is a God, all people who are good, I believe, will be allowed a place in Heaven.
People who say you will go to Hell or not get a place if you do not surrender yourself to total belief, are mean, and not true christians.

I'm a Christian but I believe most Christians will go to Hell!
You are right when you say that it is about the goodness of the soul. That is why Lord Jesus says that when he come back, will he find faith on earth (when there are over 2 billion christians in this world?). The Lord also says he has sheeps from other flocks. So it is not for us to judge whether non-Christians can go to heaven or not. My personal belief is that a non-Christian who is practicing Christian values would fare better than a Christian who does not practice what he preach.

Christians believe that the Bible is the word of God (inspired by God). The Bible says that the only way to God is through Jesus Christ. He is the way. Now, the word "Christian" is no where in the Bible. But, if the word "Christian" means to believe in Jesus Christ as The Way, The Truth, and The Life, and you are a "Christian" then theoretically speaking (well, I'm a Christian so I whole-heartedly believe this) you will go to Heaven because you have The Way. (In Jesus Christ). "Christians" believe this. You don't have to agree, but why don't you? And...the goodness of your soul stuff comes from loving God. If you love God you will keep his commandments, i.e. have a "good soul." Basically, we're all sinners, Christians and non-Christians alike, but if you believe that Jesus Christ is The Way, then he takes care of that for you and saves your soul where you could not.

Christians (and Jews) think they deserve Heaven because that's what THEIR God promises THEM. Muslims are promised "Paradise" by Allah their God. Hindus and Buddhist also have their "rewards" and levels of enlightenment, etc.

Your question makes me wonder why do non-Jews / non-Christians believe they should go to the Heaven promised by the God they really don't believe in and don't want to follow?

It's like subscribing / adhering to "Plan A" but expecting the benefits that "Plan B" offers also. Or taking the bus marked "Seattle" and you expect to wind up in "Hawaii." Just doesn't work.

It's not a benign religion. It is the bloodiest religion that has ever existed. Read the Old Testament and the amazing amount of bloodshed. Read about God wiping all of mankind off the face of the earth because God was sad He ever made man in the first place. Read about Sodom and Gomorrah that was judged for their sexual immorality that stank to high heaven. Read of all the animal sacrifices for the atonement of sin. Read Revelation and all the mass murder and worldly destruction. Read the ultimate sacrifice for sin, the death of God's only begotten son Jesus Christ. He took the punishment and he took it hard. Beaten, bruised, skin ripped from the flesh with a whip laced with glass and bone fragments to tear apart skin and muscle exposing the innards of a man. Crown of thorns piercing his temples, spat upon, beard plucked out, slapped in the face mercilessly, and continuously mocked. Nailed to a cross naked between two thieves. Suffocating on that cross bearing the full shame of all our sins upon himself so that we may have life and life eternal with a Holy, Righteous God who we do not deserve. Awesome God. And this is love: not that we loved God, but that while we were still sinners He died for us. And you talk about the goodness of the soul? That's the whole point. We're not good for anything but to be cast into hell. Merciful God for sending the savior for mankind, Jesus Christ who is to be forever praised with glory and honor. The Bible doesn't just drip with blood. It flows with blood like a river.

The text is clear that only Christians get to go to heaven.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Hitler who was a Roman Catholic and he believed in Jesus and surely asked for forgiveness. The six million Jewish people he killed did not believe in Jesus. Hitler was evil for what he done, but somehow Bible god gets off the hook for eternally torturing those same Jewish people.

The god of the Bible is the most evil character in all of fiction.

Christians have an assurance towards Heaven because the Word of God said John 10:9 "I am the door by me if any man enter in he shall be saved." There is no other way but through Jesus Christ, He is the door.

Because That book" that was written hundreds of years ago", has rules that you follow to get into Heaven. And a promise that goes with it. The rules that are in that book is what this country is based on. You are right about the goodness of the soul, but God wants to be worshiped his way,not yours.

Revelation 21:8 and Revelation 20:11-15 and many other verses that tell you what you must be do to be saved. if you want to enter the kingdom of heaven. Good works alone
won't get you there.
If you want to validate the book that was written hundreds of years ago, do a web search on fulfilled Bible Prophecy and check out the dates it was prophesied and the dates they were fulfilled.

I do not deserve to go to heaven, if I got what I deserved right now it would be hell. The only person who deserved heaven was Jesus Christ and He died on a cross so that ALL people would not have to go to hell.
Your theology is cruel really to you only the "kind and good" can go to heaven. If that were true I would never make it. (insert a "you bet you've been a jerk" here cause I have been.) Thankfully I don't have to because of what Jesus did and neither does anyone else. That id why I can say I have a loving God because he died for me even though I did not deserve it. And he died for every single person on this planet.

We don't deserve to go to heaven any more than anyone else. The only difference between the saved and the unsaved is that we have accepted Jesus Christ's free gift of salvation. God made the rules, you have to play by His rules in order to get to heaven. It is about forgiveness, no boy on this earth is good. Jesus Christ is the only man who ever lived a sinless life.
