Xoloitzcuintle
All are small or medium sized dogs.

Cocker Spaniels are good dogs. They are very energetic so it will be good to have kids around them. You make both the kids and the dog happy. They are very sweet dogs. They usually don't get any bigger then 20 pounds or so, they are a medium size dog. They don't shed as long as you groom them regularly. Good Luck on finding the perfect dog. I also suggest you look at rateitall.com before deciding because it will tell you what some of the most dangerous breeds of dogs are. Some have been listed on here and you might want to consider that also.

Certain breeds have hair that grows more like people hair so these dog could be a good option. Breeds include poodles (which range in size from teacup to standard) and Shih Tzus (small dogs). Proper training is needed to help a pet behave with small children. I recommend slow introduction of the new dog to the children. Every experience with children should be positive so have treats ready and monitor kids for roughhousing. As children get older, getting them more involved in the care of the pet will help a bond develop. Young children can help feed and play with the pet.
One bad experience can make an animal afraid of children, therefore teaching children how to be nice to animals is vital!

These are great family dogs. My dentist did not want a standard poodle but his wife insisted. He is so glad she did. They have owned several through many years and have always been glad they did. They are active family people who now have many grand children as well. The standard poodle is wonderful with children, smart and easily trained.
The Standard Poodle is proud, elegant, dignified and good-natured. These dogs are highly intelligent and one of the most trainable breeds. They are pleasant, happy and sensitive. The Standard Poodle tends to be a bit calmer than the smaller variety of Poodles. They need to be with people and dislike being alone. For the most part they are generally friendly toward strangers, and are excellent with children. The Standard Poodle is good with other dogs. Some Standards are good guard dogs and some can be trained as hunters.

How about a Boston Terrier? They are a smaller dog (maybe 25 lbs max), have very short fur, have sweet dispositions, love kids and their families and don't need endless hours of exercise.
Go to the American Kennel Club website, they have full descriptions of AKC registered dogs and I think they might have a test that you answer and then they give you a list of dogs that would be good for your family.
Also, don't forget a shelter dog. We have one of those and she is the sweetest tempered dog we have every owned. She was one year old when we got her and was already house trained. She is a Heinz 57, don't really know what she is, but whatever it is, she is just perfect.

Well, there are several dogs out there that are great with children but only a few that doesn't shed so much. If you are looking for a smaller dog then go got a Shih tzu. I have one and it is great with my niece and nephew and she sheds none at all, you just have to brush them daily and keep them clean otherwise they end up with painful dredlocks. But they are great with everybod. Mine goes everywhere with me and she has never tried to bite at all. A few months ago she was around a baby for the first time and she sniffed the baby and then laid down right next to her and the baby even grabbed a fist full of hair and Tibbit (my 7 month old puppy) did nothing. She just stayed laying down.

Portugese Water Dogs are the perfect additional to any family looking for a loving, friendly, fun companion. They do not shed but are rather large so I would not suggest them for smaller dwellings. They have the patient of a saint and are great around kids and other pets.

It depends on what size you want.
I have an absolutly adorable Bichon Frise, a very likes children. The breed doesn't shed a single hair. Contrairy to popular belife about small dogs, she isn't loud, snappy, or to energetic, but likes nothing more than curling up with her family for a long snuggle.

Myabe a small dog if you have small children because a big dog could easily hurt a smaller kid. Make sure to get a nice dog like a yorki or something smal like that. I have a bulldog but she sheds like crazy but hey? You gotta love her! Good luck finding a dog hope it's perfect for you and your family!

I've heard that Australian Silky Terriers don't shed - though you will need to brush their hair - & they are meant to be good with children.
They're a bit like a Yorkshire terrier but bigger. I think they weigh in at around 10lbs, whereas a Yorke might be around 6lbs. So not quite so delicate as a little Yorkie.
But I'm sure that you're going to be researching all the breeds that have been suggested online - so you can find out for sure.
