First I would go to a Dietician/Nutritionist and get a weight management plan for she/he will also determine how many calories you need to maintain your wanted weight. When you reach your desired weight obviously you need to cut back on the diet or the physical activity--but at this point you do not know how to cut back for if you stop the diet you'll gain it all back Why a sensible Weight Management Plan is more life lasting than a diet.

You find a diet where you body weight stays the same. There is always a point where your are taking in as much as you're burning.

If you exercise then you'll pick up muscle mass -- in that case, just count inches (body fat, like around your waist) and don't worry about pounds / kilos.

What you want to do is talk to your doctor first to see what kind of exercise is suitable for you. Once he clears you, you want to focus on two phases. the first is getting rid of excess body fat, you want to do a lot of "fat burning zone" cardio, which is low paced at long periods of time. This is a good method to start with. You also want to cut excess sugars out of your diet a long with unhealthy carbs and fat. Focus on lean meats, grains, fruits and nuts, nuts are a perfect source of good fat (yes there's good fat, fish is high in it too, so eat tuna). I judge what I eat by how it looks. I try to eat only things that look as close to how they did when they became food. IE processed foods = bad foods. So no hot dogs or corn dogs, meat loaf etc. Once your BMI (Body Mass Index, or how much of your body weight is fat) is at a safe and healthy pecentage, you want to start eating a lot of protein and start working out with weights. This will build muscle which will help you too put on healthy muscle weight. At this point you will gain weight, but you'll start to see definition. After that the sky is the limit. Remember that in order to do something all you have to do is honestly make the conscious decision to do it. After that all you have to do is let it happen. Good Luck!!

it's really just math. it's all about calories in versus calories out. you must figure out how many calories you are burning in a day, and weigh it against how many you are taking in. count all calories from food and drink (condiments included, etc.) and you should be able to figure out exactly how much you should eat to maintain weight, lose weight, gain it, etc. of course, there is always considerations such as muscle vs. bodyfat %age, if you have an extremely high or low metabolism (rare), etc. check out this site for more info.
