This is definitely NOT a normal occurrence. I somehow doubt it was a Roman Catholic Church on a Wednesday night for Bible Study, as well.
Try another church, start with Sunday services, just observe first and see how you feel. Listen to the announcements, If you are comfortable, go to the coffee and refreshments after service. See how the people treat you.
If you are uncomfortable with any of it, try another church the next week.
For generally a reserved, non-judgmental atmosphere, I recommend a local Episcopal Church to start. If that's too reserved, you might like Presbyterian. Learn the doctrine later, but find a place you are comfortable. These people will probably not descent upon you like a pack of wolves which you might find in Pentecostal churches, such as Assemblies of God, Four Square. But that might be your style, as well, check it out, and don't let one group scare you.
Good luck,, God Bless you (I think he's leading your search and will help to guide you to the right place for yourself)

I can only speak from personal experience, I was raised in a catholic church and attended catholic school They do have some very strange ways about them. I now attend a A.M.E. Church (African Methodist Episcopal) and it is very loving and I enjoy attending services and look forward to bible study. We do separate the children from the adults, however only because of the levels of teaching we want to make sure that the children are taught in a manner they are able to understand. I would not allow this to deter me from attending church. I would check out a few more churches until you find one you are comfortable at. I have visited many different churches until i found one i was comfortable with. Good luck and God bless

That's a Catholic church for you. I grew up Catholic! man, talk about limitations and brain washing. I grew up thinking everything was evil. Not all Catholic churches are like this though, but majority of them are. Sometimes they're kinda cold and very serious. Going to church is something you should look forward to.

You went to a church but you do not know what kind of church? As others have said, probably not a Catholic church, we are not big on Bible study. Was there Bingo?

You went to ONE church and is scared of churchs?
It is like you eating ONE fruit, disliking it and disliking all the thousands of different fruits that exist in the world.
There are churchs and churchs.
In some, yes. It is a normal occurrence. In many others, no. In some they will not even see you. In others you will be received with love and care.
In some they brainwash believers. In others, believers are stimulated to think, to do research, to analyse.
But there is a place that you will never be afraid of: near Jesus Christ. He is full of love for you.

I doubt you were in a Catholic church. They don't do things like that. You can find Church's that are more low key. What you experienced was what is called Bible thumping. They think their way is the only way and it just isn't so.

Every church differs, not by religion necessarily, but church by church. If a church makes you uncomfortable, try somewhere else. I went through quite a few churches before I found one that fit me. It is a very small, very liberal Methodist church, and it took some finding, but it was worth it.

just like in any learning situation -- schools for one - you are placed in a category befitting your understanding at the time. to put you in a group where you are totally lost is wasting time for you. how is giving you the information you sought brainwashing? you were there out of choice, not fear or against your will.
