I think my wife is drowning herself to fill her empty stomach. I know she has an eating problem I'm trying to get help with. Is it common for someone to choke down water through this way?

Not common I mean, is there a name for something like this and is it associated with a specific eating disorder or some other type of illness?

if your saying she does this because she's hungry, and since she "is" doing it in the shower to hide it from you, maybe she is a type of anerexia, i don't know if it has a certain name but instead of just doing the starve thang or only eating under a certain amount of callories a day some anerexians drink tons of water to stay full, and they eat ice for quick snacks that full the body into thinking its eating. eigher way she might need to be checked or seen by someone, not that she would willing want to go, that will be a whole other yahoo question there. but start watching her, give her less chances to bindge drink to get full. and see what she really weighs or how important that is to her, do some investagtions on her, like is she constantly weighing herself or if she is hiding her body in huge clothes. and she would experience some mood swings as well. the more you let her know that you see all of this, the quicker she might see it and want the help and be willing to get it. good luck

I would definitely get your wife to a doctor ASAP. There is a condition called polydypsia that can occur when there is a lesion to the medial hypothalamus in the brain. In this condition, individuals develop an insatiable thirst for water. If unchecked, they may consume so much water that they become delerious (due to electrolyte imbalances in the body), and eventually death can ensue.

So take her to her primary care doc, and he/she can recommend whether or not a neurologist is warranted.

In that fashion, not that I'm aware of. However, there are people who intoxicate themselves by rapidly consuming massive amounts of water. Around a dozen or so people die every year from this, but I forget what it's called.

Some people actually get drunk off water and die of internal drowning, not sure if its a mental thing or not
