Hi, I have my tongue pierced and if you have any concerns about the potential of damaging your teeth I don't suggest you get this piercing done. I have chipping on my two front teeth as well as a translucent tone to my teeth now as a result of loss of enamel. Having your tongue pierced can result in migration of the piercing or you can bite down on the tongue ring by accident while eating or just not being careful enough. If you have any medical conditions such as seizures, it can be a concern because you may bite down on the ring during a seizure. I have also had the labret done as well. I had to remove that piercing altogether because it caused gum damage and it began to wear away at the enamel on one of my teeth. When the gum line began to receed I had to remove it. It seems like all of the oral piercings have a certain amount of risk involved. My tongue ring scrapes the inside of my teeth and rubs up against my gums which isn't good for my overall oral health. Depending on the size of your mouth and tongue you may encounter the same problem.
My husband had his tongue pierced one time and the piece underneath his tongue where the tongue attaches to your mouth became separated at one point. He removed the piercing and it reattached. Since then he has repierced his tongue and hasn't encountered that problem.
If you should decide to get pierced, I suggest using Gly Oxide for the first few days. Also use Listerine for about 4-6 weeks after meals and smoking. The piercer will sometimes pierce you in a ring with a longer shaft and have you come back in a few days once the swelling has gone down. This is done to allow for inflammation.
Getting pierced actually does NOT hurt. You don't feel anything from it.
Whatever you decide good luck....

I used to have my tongue pierced. I would sit down with your professional piercer and ask them what initial steps you need to take. Once you have had it a while try this.... I used to take mine out when I brushed by teeth (2x a day) and brush it with toothpaste and a toothbrush, I would then soak it in some listerine while I rinsed. I did this mostly because I have noticed that sometimes when you have a tongue ring it contributes to bad breath.
As far as your teeth go, my dentist used to warn me that it can chip your teeth. I never had that problem though. I would just recommend not excessively playing with it in your mouth, and being careful while you eat.
If you have lots ot concerns, talk to your dentist and a piercing professional before you make a final decision.
Oh, and I don't know if it makes much of a difference necessarily, but I would recommend getting a simple barbell with small balls to start with. This will make it easier to keep clean, and help you not to bang it on your pearly whites!

All, that I can advise is to be very careful in doing this to begin with, as we should not have metals in our mouths at all (to include dental work). The metal is absorbed into the body much the same as a coin left in a water fountain will eventally dissolve, totally. I know that you might think that having such a thing done is "kool," but you need to consider the long term effects of doing something like this, first. See the link below for Dr. Clark's book called.
"The Cure For All Diseases." And, I am not saying that you have any diseases, now, but you need to know that some disease causing bacteria actually feed off of some metals on and in our bodies.

I had my tongue pierced for about two years and it slowly started breaking down the enamel (sp) on my teeth. To clean it rinse with yellow listerine everytime you eat, drink, smoke, or have anything in your mouth for about a month. Mine took about 2 months to heal enough to change it, but once I took it out it closed up. Some people's don't though.

In that case, you may also want use Crest White Strips sample. I've been using it, and there hasn't been any ill effects. At least, you'll still look clean even with a pierced tongue. Here's a good site http://www.upkb.com/crestwhitestrips.php for the product details.

It is bad for your teeth- and the rest of your body. NOT MY OPINION. ACTUAL FACT. It lets a whole bunch of un-necessary metal into your system and is a great conduit for infection. However, if you want to really know how to care for it, ask the person you would go to to have it pierced- they will have the best information for you.

Good luck to you. I had my tongue peirced for about a week, they peirced it crooked and I ended up with metal hitting up against a nerve. If that wasn't bad enough..it would bleed everytime I ate. THe pain was excrutiating...but none of my firiends had this happen. LUCky me. THeirs were straight..little pain...just a little swollen..but ya listerine...everytime you eat..chew gum..put anything into your mouth that would introduce bacteria.

WELL I'M NOT GOING TO JUDGE YOU WANT TO DO WITH YOUR OWN BODY, BUT IT MAY INTEREST YOU KNOW IS THAT HAVING A LONG STEM FOR YOUR RING MAY BE DANGEROUS WHEN YOU CHEW BECAUSE YOU MIGHT INADVERTANTLY BITE ON IT AND BREAK PART OF YOUR BACK TEETH. CLEANING IT IS REALLY SOMETHING THAT MOST PEOPLE DON'T REALLY DO. HEALING TAKES A FEW DAYS.
