They only need to be long enough to twist. And Lil-Hem, you are showing just how ignorant you truly are. You can wash your hair with dreadlocks. Just because that is your singular experience does not mean that that is how it is done. Many people have locks and maintain them well. When you are starting, you can wash your hair, you just must re-twist any that come undone. And once they have set, you can wash them however much you want. You just need to make sure that you condition regularly and don't over-twist them or they will start to grow smaller and may weaken and break off. Dreadlocks form from lack of combing the hair not lack of washing. Also, if you want locks and you want them long but your hair is still short, you can go to a loctician or someone experienced with the locking process and they can use hair extensions to start the process. Your hair will look locked and long.

Your hair doesn't need to be very long to begin training it into dreds. There is also shampoo on the market that will keep your hair clean without having to get it wet.
There is a young man who tutors in our reading lab. He is Caucasian and has the nicest (and cleanest) dreds I've seen. His hair is almost to the middle of his back.
PS Where I come from it's spelled d-r-e-d-s. Strange, no?

You can start at 3 inches, but depending on who is doing the dreads 3 may not be possible, the shorter it is the harder it is to do. I would say 5 inches is a good length to get rolling.

as long as its about an inch from your scalp, dreads can be started. long as its natural hair. if your hair is shorter, you can start by simply getting gel twist. if your hair is 4-5 inches or longer, you can simply get regular twist and get someone to palm roll it every couple of weeks... thats after wearing the twist unwashed for 1-2 months. long process, but definantly worth it!

I should be like to your shoulders. Oh, and to the people that say you don't wash your hair with dreads, you're supposed to wash them at least once a week...

I've seen people start them with hardly any hair at all... but from what I understand, you can put product in your hair to "create" dreds but it's mostly from not washing them and just twisting the hair together to form the "locks"...
Everyone I've seen with dredlocks, it's kinda gross and they say they itch a lot...
Then again I'm no expert!

Dreadlocks may look pretty cool, but just remember, when you have them, you don't wash your hair!!!!! NASTY!!!!! I sat behind a boy in senior Oceanography. There was hair always breaking off and falling on my desk. And you could tell he hadn't washed his hair due to the smell!!! YUCKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!
