I Have a 3 month, new to me Boston Terrior puppy. I have been checking up on the crate trianing. How long is too long for a pup to stay in his cage? I have to work 8 hrs a day. Is this too long? any suggestions? I can't leave to home for lunch. I will be gone the full 8 hrs. Don't have a friend to let him out. HELP> Poor little guy. :(

I think crate training for a puppy that young and time is too long, however when he gets older not a bad idea until fully trained. Now, I would personally get a baby gate with newspaper and leave him in there until off work. When off work I would take him out every several hours.

After the dog is older his bladder will be stronger, and after properly praising him when he does good, and a consistant diet I think he should be fine in a crate all day or left free in the house.

My dog is fine being left at home, he sleeps all day when I am gone and I come home on my lunch break and after work he eats and goes to the bathroom. Hasn't had an accident since he was 9 months old.

good luck

Puppies usually need to go potty more frequently than older dogs. As your puppy gets older, he should be able to last 8 hours in his crate. Until he is older, using the crate only at night may be better. This would prevent him from peeing in his crate and learning to hate the crate. Keeping him confined in a small area (ie bathroom) may be your best bet right now. When he is older and more housetrained, he can stay in the crate during the day.
Crate training tips: try making his crate a very positive experience. Feed him in the crate (while keeping the door open) and put him in the crate while you are home for short periods of time will help him get used to it. Crate training pays off in the long run but can be frustrating at first. Stick to the crate training and it will pay off! Yes, that's too long for a puppy that age. He should be going out to pee about every 2-3 hours at that age. You could try getting him a play yard and setting it up in the house with a rubber mat under it. I did that for a while but eventually, this might still become too much of a problem for you.

It would be ideal if you could come home in the middle of the day to check on him.

Good luck.

Do you not have an outside fenced in? My dog stays out all day until we get home and then we let him in. At night we let him out several times. We have no problem with the dog needing potty training because he uses it out side. Once or twice I caught the dog using the restroom on the floor and I dragged it outside the second I caught it..Believe it or not we only did this 3-4 times when the dog was a puppy. Just don't tolerate the dog using it on the floor and don't let it get by with it even once.

make friends with a neighbor who is at home during the day because 8 hrs alone for a puppy is too long, he will probably have behavioral problems later in life if he is left by himself that long

That is a long time! Can someone check on him to take him out/play with him? Maybe you can do doggie daycare...

put the damn dog outside in the yard while you are at work...if you live in an apartment then you shouldn't have got a dog in the first place
