I'm a RN who has taught Nursing for over 20 years. Despite the advice given to you by 2 previous responders, there is a documented history of some health care providers who had Aids passing it onto their patients. So please disregard their advice as it is not correct. I would suggest to you that you look into "A Patient's Bill Of Rights", "The American Medical Association's Position On Physicians Having Aids and Their Responsibility About Self-disclosing This To Their Patients", "The Bylaws of Public Hospitals", "The American Dental Association's Position On Dentists Having Aids and Their Responsibility About Self-disclosing This To Their Patients", etc. As a RN you can correctly surmise that I definitely support the affirmative side of this debate topic. I know of two patients of a Florida dentist who caught his same type of Aids and died a short time later. This was in newspapers and on many TV shows for months and months. To look up information on my suggestions, please Google as well as use Ask.com to seek information about the Professional positions that I put in quotations. This should provide you with tons of information. I suggest that you also Google "Dentists convicted of giving Aids to their patients." I hope that these suggestions will be helpful. Good luck to you. I have a feeling that your position will preside in this debate. God bless.

Yes and No. I have health insurance provided by the county where I work. If I use a county facility, the doctor visit, prescriptions and lab work is free. I also have a dental and vision plan. The part I do not like is MY cost. I pay about $320/mo for a family of 4...any additions are added at no cost. And if I choose to use a physician for my child which is NOT a county employee, my co pay is $15.

Personally, if my health care provider has anything that can be transmitted to me, I should be told. I can then make an informed decision as to whether or not I wish to continue to see that provider. And if my provider is taking precautions to prevent the spread of the disease to me (such as wearing gloves, covering any open sores or cuts, etc) then I would have no problem going to a health care provider who had HIV or AIDS.

If I were to find out from some other source that my provider had HIV or AIDS and had to confront my provider to find out about the issue, I would immediately stop going to that provider. I need to be albe to trust my provider. If they lie about their own health issues then why would I trust them with mine?

I am going to say NO. No health care provider should be a carrier of a dangerous contagious disease like that -- so you can't be told that your health care provider has AIDS, because your health care provider does NOT have AIDS. (To say it again: that person should get a job in some other field).

1) To my knowledge there has been no case of a health care worker spreading AIDS to a patient.

Therefore, I would say NO, a health care worker is profoundly aware of their status and would be extra careful when treating a patient.

On the other hand, if the health care worker was my surgeon, I think I would want to know. But for the most part NO.

Yes you should be aware if your health care provider has AIDs because if they treat you and have an open cut you can be infected .

What do you think? (And which side of the debate are you on?)

Personally, I don't care if my doctor has AIDS. I hope for their sake they don't and for my sake cos I have a good doctor and don't want to lose them.

But ... I go to the pathology labs and get a blood tech to take my blood.

My doctor would refer me to a plastic surgeon for removal of skin cancers or anything else like that.

Her nurse would give me any injections that I need.

I am in no danger of needlestick from (and am certainly not having any sexual thing or sharing needles with) my doctor.

I can't get AIDS from talking with her or having her listen to my chest or feeling my tummy or any of the other things she might do.

Would I worry about a prostate examination? She'll use gloves.

I don't care apart from I want my doctor to look after herself so she can continue to look after me. If I knew she had AIDS I don't think I would change cos I get looked after so well, and I know about the dodgy ones out there.

I believe that all patients have a right to know, so they could make an informed decision whether they want to take the chance of catching the HIV virus or not.
