He is usually nice and sweet but for the last few days he has been attacking and scratching me and I don't know why.

There could be something wrong.
He could be in some kind of pain and attacks you because he's an animal and thinks you're hurting him and doesn't realize that you're not the cause of the pain.
Have a vet check him out.
Ok, I see he's ok in the morning but mean when you get home...
he's probably p*ssed that you were away all day.

My cat does that too when I get home and before I go to work. I've tried to develop a routine for her. Feeding her when I eat, then scratching her with her brush and then playing with her for a little while until she get's bored. She's gotten better. Although when I get home now she 'demands' food. LOL

Is there a new person in your life?? Are you out more than you use to be?? Have you changed the food?
Look and see IF there is anything different since the changed attitude. If not, then take your kitty to the vet because something could be wrong.

Maybe you're not paying attention to him...my cat does that to me when I'm doing something else and I ignore him when comes up to me. He might be in pain, or maybe there was a dramatic change or something that's affecting his mood?

Confined cats need exercise and activity that they are not getting from being confined indoors.

if he isn't neutered then hes probable just doing the territorial thing. or you washed something that had his scent all over it and he misses it. or your just bugging him, that's why our momma cat hates me, i chase her around and hug her and baby her, she hates it and that is so cute. but if she gets mad enough she does considerable damage to my hand.

has anything differed in the amount of time you have spent at home with him? if you arent home as much he is probably resentful.
