He is a large lab/rot mix, fixed, but got stuck today in our in-heat female pit-bull terrier. He started sleeping outside three nights ago, instead of a human-warmed bed he usually sleeps in. It happened once before, when the pit wasn't in heat, so I am not sure if one is connected to the other or not. Could he be sick?

Does your female dog stay inside? Female animals in heat definitely act different than when they are not in heat. Maybe your male dog would rather be out in the cold/rain than putting up with your female dog. Believe me, I've seen animals go to quite some length to avoid being around another animal that they, for whatever reason, just don't want to be around.

dogs loose thier personality when you fix em espacially the males, hes just depressed about life i think, he already had some of his personality taken away so take em to the park show em a good time he might get over it but his usual" be with u" personality wont come back......sorry you can mark me down but thats the truth

my goldendoodle does that sometimes also... but during the day... however one of the reasons we've assumed for him is that he has sooooo much fur he gets too warm in the house and he lays on the deck where it is nice and cool.

He is upset with you because you were irresponsible and failed to spay your female dog. WE DO NOT NEED ANY MORE DOGS!!! Have you looked at your local humane society or in the classifieds. The nation is overrun with stray, unwanted animals. Please spay and neuter your pets!!!
