I have an 8 week old mini beagle puppy. He's at the chewing stage right now (especially on my hands and feet) and I bought some rawhide chew sticks for him. I'm afraid though that he will choke on them. I gave him one for a little bit and he loved it but I took it away for the fear it would get caught in his throat or make him sick. Any advice?

G'day, I have a beagle puppy also, but she's almost 5 months now, but when we got her at 8 weeks, she was chewing on kangaroo paw (we're in aus) dried liver (as recommened by our vet - is small treats though) and she had rawhide shoes, but making sure you remove the laces, as this is what my mother always taught me as she's a poodle breeder for many years. I'll tell you the best toy for chewing I came across for the Beagle was a Kong. We'd fill it full of treats and she'd go mad over it. Just make sure when you give your puppy rawhide, or anything to chew, if it gets too small, take it anyway. Rawhide strips by Smackos are great, they rarely shrink in size plus they are baste with flavor the dogs just lick them before eating them. I gave our dog own about 3 weeks ago and it's still recognizable :)

Compressed rawhide is safer than regular rawhide in terms of potential to cause blockages. However, it is as hard as concrete. I don't think I'd give it to a puppy that young. Nylabone makes many excellent, safe, reasonably priced chew products. So does Kong. I'd try those first.

Hi Nicole... this is a debatable question as some people say it is fine, and some people say HELL NO, it's bad!!!

I personally don't give mine rawhides because they become SOOO possessive like I have never seen EVER. But I do give Nylabones... and they now have Iams chewing brushes.

I think the debate against rawhide is that if they swallow too big of a piece, it actually gets BIGGER while in their stomach making it hard, or impossible, to pass through. I don't know how common it is, and I'm not arguging for or against, I'm just letting you know I think that is ONE of the reasons...

Wish I knew more! :)

I have heard quite a bit about rawhides. Everyone i have talked to, including various vets, have told me to avoid them because they don't break down in a dogs stomach. Any dogs stomach. I found this out the hard way cause my Jack Russell is a major chewer, and rawhide bones were something he truly loved. A few months later he was always puking up chunks of rawhide and was really sick. I took him to the vet and they told me that rawhide doesn't break down, and if they digest semi big pieces they will get stuck in their stomach, throat, or intestines causing blockages. I had to have his stomach pumped to get it all out, and that was pretty costly procedure. I give them NylaBones since they will break down in their stomach, and Kong toys. They are about the only tough toys that will last around him and my rotties, and they are safe for them. But, if you do give him rawhides then make sure that you take it away if you notice he is breaking off big pieces, or if the bones gets to the point where he could possibly swallow it.

The chewing may be due to teething. Don't give him rawhide anything right now. Give him something soft like the Dr. Noy brand toys (our lab puppy's favorite was the frog) or get him a puppy kong from the Kong Company. Put the Kong in the freezer for a bit to chill it. If you still want to give him rawhide, give him beef hide chips because it has lower arsnic levels.

I have a 7Month old Pug right now and have had many dogs in my life time. Raw hides are dangerous for puppies and small breeds because they can chew off small pieces and swallow them. They may choke, I have always found the best thing for puppies are the Denta Bones and getting soup bones from the butcher shops.
My Puppy ( A Black Pug) loves branches. So we give her some from the pear tree to chew on.
Hey they're dogs right? And puppies at that.

Hope I helped.

Honestly I am not a fan of rawhide. I would look and see if you can find a small kong or a nylabone, you can also ask your local pet store if they carry a sterilized white bone (not sure of name), that will not break or splinter that you can put treats inside of. The sterilized bones are the only ones I allow my dog to have.
