This is a powerful book that is far removed from the experiences of younger generations in western civilization. Yes, the brutish treatment led people to behave in their worst ways. This is desperation at its peak. Still, there was hope, solace in music, and studying Scripture. Not everyone lost faith, hope, or love, but many of those that did lost all evidence of them.

This calls to mind a short story by Mark Twain called "The Man that Corrupted Hadleyburg." Many people that we think of as 'good' or seem to exhibit faith, hope, and love, may simply not be thoroughly tested. Perhaps only people who are 'good' through slow prolonged suffering and imminent death have truly revealed the fruits of their faith. I pray that we are not tested to these extremes, not only because of the physical misery, but because of what we may learn about our true characters.

I read Night in 9th grade...don't remember the details but remember it was overall a pretty good book/depiction of the Holocaust.
What your teacher means by that statement is basically that Eli (the main character) in this novel discovers that the good people , who are tortured by the cruel treatment they are receiving, have turned into beasts or brutes. They have turned into beasts or brutes because they have lost their faith in God. When they lose their faith, they tend to follow the Devil and his temptations.

make sense? hope so...good luck.
