it was to start this Jan but because of hurricanes and lack of building congress has pushed it back to Jan 2009 most major cities are already broadcasting hd so jump in watch the amazing picture plus people don't realize that sound is in 5.1 surround for a lot of the broadcasts

There is no such date. There is a requirement for all stations to cease broadcasting analog TV in early 2009. That does not mean they will broadcast HDTV. They can choose to cease broadcasting (not likely). If they want to continue, they must broadcast digitally. But digital TV does not automatically mean HDTV with its widescreen format. They could still broadcast SDTV (standard definition) and retain the 4:3 format. However, it appears that in most areas of the US, station will at least transmit their network feeds that come in HDTV as HDTV, but local programming will still be SDTV in many cases.
