If you know where and when they were picked up, you can look on the website of your local police. It is free and they have a list of every call made in each 24 hour period. It will not give names, but will state the reason of the call and give an address and time and date.
Oh, and keep in mind if they were picked up by city police or county sheriff when you look it up.

Being charged and being convicted are two different matters. If the person has been convicted, it's a matter of public record. If the person was simply arrested for that charge and no conviction was obtained, there is a record of the arrest but it's illegal even for a police officer to run a record check without a viable reason.

A quicker, simpler way is to ask a cop to do a quick check. That's a matter of public record, but web sites that offer this service are never free.
The cop will need the DOB.

You can call the police department and see whether your friend was arrested. Then go to the court and see if your friend was charged.
