i bought a 9v ac/dc acapter. the unit i use needs a 9v ac input. the adapter has a dc output. i pluged it in and it still worked. what would happen if i still used it even thought the adapter has a dc output to a unit that needs a ac input.

It wouldn't work. AC is alternating current (polarity swings) and DC is direct current (polarity stays the same).
Don't experiment with switching the currents around, you'll break your equipment. Be SURE you know which polarity and current type you need, and which ones you are using.

Most if not all ac/dc adapters are just that. Makes dc out of ac. I have never seen an electronic device that needed 9v ac input. Even your computer changes ac to dc to operate the computer.
