The problem is that people see all the problems that is caused by over consumption of alcohol, so they think it's all bad. The Bible teaches balance in everything. There's nothing wrong with having sex with your wife, eating good food, having a good time, and drinking wine or other beverages. Humans tend to overindulge in some things and that's why they get viewed as bad by some. The Bible condemns drunkenness so drink in moderation only.

I am christian and I drink alcohol. So do my fellow saints. We don't get drunk, but we enjoy a beer or a glass of wine. There are cases when you shouldn't. Like when you might cause another to stumble. It is also not a good idea to drink in front of a non-believer for a similar reason. Basically, you say justify what they already do. Even though you are not drunk, you may as well be in their eyes.

Yes, drinking in moderation is certainly Biblical. Getting drunk -- even 'by accident' -- is not. God gave us many things to enjoy within certain limits. Because there is a limit on drinking (don't overdo it) some Christians prefer to simply avoid it altogether. The philosophy was, as I understand it, if I may get carried away with this and go beyond what God says is acceptable, maybe I'd just better stay away from it entirely. If I can't control myself once I start drinking, in other words, I just won't start.
Don't be silly; if it was black currant, the Bible would've said black currant.

Luke 12:19 says that. But you got it out of context. The passage continues:
But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?'
Drinking some wine is not bad. Jesus did drink (eg. last supper). The importance is being careful not to get drunk.
But the Bible also says we should get drunk: of the Holy Spirit (not wine). Do you have Jesus in your heart? Think about this before getting drunk.

If they feel OK without it, it's fine. But you are right; this is their personal choice and not something they are required to do.
A little drink from time to time is also fine, getting drunk or becoming an alcoholic is not. Some rules are to drink always with food (or right after a meal), to drink in the company of others and to drink moderately.

As Christians we must not put obstacles in the way of other Christians. If a fellow believer has problems with alcohol, either they have a history of alcoholism or their faith does not permit alcohol, then they must be respected. For this reason some Christians practise abstuinence from alcohol. Not for legalism, but out of love for others.

The only drinking to be merry as far as 'true' Christians go is in the drinking of the 'blood' of Christ - hey and I'm not even a practising Methodist for the last forty years - deary me, how commercialism has pervaded even the sanctity of Christianity.

The Bible condems drinking to excess. It doesn't tell where to draw the line between being sober and being drunk, so we have to decide for ourselves if we are going to take that risk.
Ephesians 5:18,19 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord

Alcohol in the scriptures is not a sin. Alcohol abuse is clearly a sin and problem in the scriptures. Most Christians recognize that alcohol can easily become a problem so as opposed to risking it they completely avoid the temptation.

what says "drink and be merry"?Do you know???The only two references I find refer to foolishness and vanity......Luke 12:14 and Ecclesiastes 8:14-15whic says"14There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity. 15Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
