Hey. I need a bit of advice from fellow followers of the Old Ways. I just can't decide on who my matron goddess should be. I'm stuck between the egyptian Bast, goddess of freedom and independence, and Isis, goddess of magick and fertility. I feel a strong pull towards them both. How did some of you guys finally decide on which deity was right for you? Any feedback welcome.

Don't force the issue. Remember, you're a polytheist, so there's nothing saying you can't worship BOTH of them. It sounds like you're young in your practice, so you should consider working with a wide range of deities anyway. If Bast or Isis, or some other goddess, is meant to become your patroness, she'll let you know eventually.

It is widely said that Gods choose the worshipper, not the other way around. While in truth I think it works both ways, the above wisdom is still something to think about.

Ask the universe.
Think of what symbols each one represents.
For instance Bast might be a lioness or a cat. Isis might be a cow or a Madonna type figure.
Then wait and watch over the next few days and see which of those symbols seem to pop up for you. If both do then set a date such as Nov. 5th (the full moon) and see which one is dominate on that day.

I agree with So good, if you cannot choose one or the other, then pick both. The choice is ultimately up to you. Me I worship The Creator (The ancient Greeks called this being Chaos, but I find the term a bit disrespectful so I just call it the Creator) and Ge (you know her as Gaea [Gaia]). She is known as the Mother of All Beings and The Oldest One; she was Created from the Chaos by the Creator that's how I see it, but many don't. To each their own. Good luck on this my friend.

Peace Out and BB to all

Ok, I am not really a pagan, but I am facinated with their gods and beliefs. I would lean more towards the greek goddess athens, goddess of wisdom and defence. In a time where stupid guys with nukes run the world, you need all the defence and wisdom you can get.

Deities will choose who they reveal themselves to. Why do you feel that you need to make a choice? I honor several deities regularly. Why would I choose only one over all of the others? Over the years, some have become more prominent in my life and then others will be more important. There is a healthy ebb and flow in my relationships with my deities---just as there is in most things in my life.

I've been drawn to Athena since I was a little girl who got hold of a Greek mythology book at the library, but other Goddesses speak to me, and I speak to Them depending on the situation, time of year, etc. You don't need to pick one to the exclusion of all others!

You don't need to choose just one. And it doesn't have to be a Goddess. I'm not going to pick for you. No true Pagan would. What a concept!

My advice is to try a guided meditation.

You can find many online, and if you record it in your own voice, it'll be more familiar and you can make it work. The Goddesses will let you know which is more for your path.

Actully to tell you the truth, my patron chose me. I did not discover who he was untill i was on the path for 16 years...He just so happened to make an appearance in a scrying meditiation with my coven mates. I hear his voice, and I get frequent visions (called UPG or unique personal gnosis) You can work with whatever diety you are happy with, you dont have to choose, in fact i believe the choice is not up to you...
Just my opinion... there are many others like it but this one is mine...

This is something you need to decide on. Even if it is to decide to honor both. Personally, I don't see it as individual as that... rather I see it as Male and Female aspects of a whole.
