Disappointing. If I had to choose an established religion I'd go with shinto.

The US forced them to accept Buddhism instead of Shintoism when they lost WWII because the Shinto religion was misused to promote Kamikaze attacks and other atrocities. The religion in actuality does not support this at all. Many Japanese still practice Shintoism, and some even combine the two religions...

I spent three years there. Shintoism is still a major factor in Japanese society. Japan is fascinating place to visit, but you'd have to live there more than a few weeks to begin to learn anything beyond the superficial regarding the Japanese themselves. They aren't normally as open and free regarding their philosophies as are Westerners.

They didn't and haven't changed. Both still exist.
