It is called to broil something a London roast, or broiled whitefish, the heat comes from the top of the oven not the bottom anything over 500 is broiling.

Self-cleaning ovens have this type of setting. The way self-cleaning works is that the oven gets heated up to ultra high temperatures and basically turns all the dirty stuff into ash.

the duck-billed platypus, tasty but stringy, must be cooked at 545 degrees. some oven mfrs. at the leading edge of haute cuisine are producing the D-B/P ready ovens. your oven which is capable of 550 degrees was made by Mitsubishi and purchased from WalMart in DodgeCity Ks.

That's your BROIL setting. It should be used to quick cook & carmelize the tops of desserts & make a cheesy melted crust on your casseroles. You can also use it for the final stages of browning meat .

I'm not sure what one would cook at that temperature, but I know that mine also goes that high for the self-cleaning setting. It needs to be hot enough to burn all the "stuff" off the oven walls. :)

I only have 500, but I do use it to broil meats and for casseroles that call for last minute cheese or toppings, be very careful with it, it burns MUCH more quickly than you would imagine. From my experience, you usually do not use it for more than 7-10 minutes, and more commonly 5 minutes or less. Good Luck...BE CAREFUL!

Cool oven!

I know recipes that need 400f, but I've never heard of one needing 550! Perhaps it's for searing things and cooking them in a certain way?

Could this possibly be due to a self cleaning feature?
