*Creatinine* is one of the chemicals tested for to check kidney function. High levels suggest there is some problem with the kidneys, but not necessarily kidney failure. Many people whose tests show elevated creatinine levels have them eventually return to normal. Usually a BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) level is taken in addition to creatinine. A comparision of the two levels helps pinpoint what the problem is.
