There are many nice places to live in LA. If you are looking for a nice place that is near the water and very safe, check out Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Venice Beach, Marina Del Rey, Palos Verdes Peninsula, Redondo Beach, Brentwood, West LA, Malibu, and Topanga. However, these areas are pretty expensive. If you are looking for nice areas that are less expensive, try Encino, Pasadena, Glendale, Sherman Oaks, or Valencia-Santa Clarita. However, the expensive areas are worth the cost because they are close to EVERYTHING that LA has to offer, plus beautiful coastal scenery, low crime and very little pollution.

I grew up in the San Fernando Valley so I feel most at ease here and many areas can be reasonable. But there are more and more crime ridden areas (avoid places such as Pacoima, Panoroma City, Arleta...) so you really need to look around the area before you put money down on a rental.
I also lived in Mar Vista which has some nice parts. It's only a few miles away from the beach but it can get warm in the summer so you'll need AC (which I didn't have there).
If you've got a job lined up, you may want to check around that area first.

Well...the nicest places in the LA area are on the Westside.
And of course, the nice places to live are pricey (Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Bel Air, Brentwood, etc). , so you can't elude that. The San Fernando Valley is nice, in some neighborhoods like Sherman Oaks, where the real estate is fair enough and not outrageously expensive...

LA has lots of great places to live. I think a lot of it will depend on where you end up working. If you find a job in Long Beach for example you won't want to end up living in the San Fernando Valley or vice versa. Speaking of beach cities, Long Beach is probably the most affordable. Downtown L.A. is booming with new loft style condos and apartments if you like it kind of funky. Mar Vista, Palms, Culver City are all west l.a. communities closer to beach and less expensive than Santa Monica, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades or Westwood. Who knows maybe you can find a guest house in Beverly Hills.

Santa Monica might be out of your price range, but Venice and Marina del Rey are very close and a little more affordable.
I live on the east side (not too into the west side scene, actually). I live in the San Gabriel Valley, south of Pasadena in a blue-collar suburban-type neighborhood. My place is huge, less than $900/mo (with no roommates), my neighborhood is safe, and I live near a freeway ramp. There are a lot of decent 'burb 'hoods that are affordable and comfortable.

Anne, Santa Monica is very nice. I live right near there. Is that where your going to work? I would recommend that you try to live as close to work as possible. The further inland you go, the more decent the rent is usually. But rentals all getting more expensive all over the southland. Check out this link, its a good way to find a place. You might want to consider a roomate? Good luck to you.

I grew up in Los Angeles... All my friends who have just graduated and move out of their parent's places have moved to West Hollywood/Hollywood.
West Hollywood tends to be a bit pricier, but is literally Beverly Hills adjacent. Hollywood is filled with people just beginning their careers waiting to make enough cash to move into Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Santa Monica areas. Culver City is also not a bad area.

I grew up in L.A. and El Segundo is perfect if you love the beach area,a small hometown kind of feeling and awesome people! There is a close sense of community and it is close to everything. It is cut off from the rest of the bigger cities by LAX so the crime is very low! Check it out! I miss it!! Good Luck!
