Hi,
I'm not sure which part of the world your in but I have recently started a non-for-profit programme for carers throughout the UK (carerscorner.com).
I applied to social services for some funding and also to The Association Of Voluntary Organisations which helped me with start up costs.
I have also applied to all the local business in my area who have been great in offering goods for raffles ect.
Hope this helps.

Non profit origination's need to get approval from the IRS. You fill out forms with the information about your group, what they are doing, why they are doing it, and a list of your statements of how you will be doing it. This takes anywhere from 6 months to 1 year. You will be filling out the forms for a 501-3(c).
This is for all U.S. non- profit origination's.
